WhatsApp Adds Voice and Image Support to ChatGPT Chats

With upgrades to WhatsApp’s ChatGPT integration, the tech industry continues to push generative AI technologies into popular platforms. The app now offers more options to communicate with the chatbot.

WhatsApp‘s ChatGPT has been updated with a few additional features. In December 2024, OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT’s official phone number, which users could keep on WhatsApp to contact the AI chatbot right within the instant messaging service. The San Francisco-based AI company initially only allowed written input, but since then, it has added the ability to accept voice and picture inputs. Users should be able to try out the new functionality, which has been pushed out internationally. Users of ChatGPT on WhatsApp may utilize the generative AI capabilities without logging onto their accounts. Its intelligence became more widely available, particularly for people with spotty internet access. Users could only enter text at first, and subscribers were unable to access their premium features. That is finally changing now.

WhatsApp’s ChatGPT has updated the app in which the Android Authority was the first to notice that the ChatGPT service through WhatsApp would now accept or send audio/video notes and picture messages as input. This implies that users can now give the AI’s chat an audio message or a picture, and it will reply. But at this time, the chatbot can only reply with text messages; it cannot currently generate images or have two-way voice conversations. Instead than typing their questions, they may now record voice messages. After analyzing the excerpts, the chatbot will provide a written response that is appropriate.

Users can now ask ChatGPT questions about any image or even request that it rate their memes thanks to image processing. Using computer vision, the AI will be able to interpret the visual input and answer the inquiry. Do note, this feature will send the image to the OpenAI servers for processing, so images containing personal information or sensitive content should be avoided. Likewise, you may now ask follow-up questions and send ChatGPT photos on Meta’s messaging app. Using OpenAI’s servers, the chatbot will process your input and respond with pertinent information.

Similarly, with voice messages, consumers will not have to write their requests, especially when it is a long and wordy inquiry. The chatbot can now process voice communications and reply to them via text outputs.

The Android Authority article claims that OpenAI also intends to enable users to access their ChatGPT accounts on WhatsApp. It’s unclear, though, if users will get any further advantages. As long as they are signed into the same account, they can synchronize these chats with the ChatGPT app or web client.

Notably, OpenAI did not disclose which AI model was being used for this service. In December, the company announced the new ChatGPT phone number, +1-800-242-8478, which users worldwide can save to their device’s contacts and search on WhatsApp to communicate with the chatbot, or those in Canada and the US can dial from their smartphones or feature phones to speak directly with the chatbot.

Later this week, OpenAI will enable users to log into their ChatGPT accounts via WhatsApp in addition to media input, which is now operational globally. This should make it possible for users who are paying for the Plus and Pro tiers to use some of WhatsApp’s premium features, such the paywalled models.

To begin, relaunch WhatsApp and add 1-800-CHATGPT (1-800-242-8478) as a contact on your phone. After that, your WhatsApp contact list ought to display the chatbot’s official account. From now on, you can communicate with it using text, images, and voice messages.

These upgrades should help those on restricted data plans get the most out of ChatGPT, as the standalone app may struggle on slow networks. The integration also spares users with limited storage from installing a dedicated app.
