On Wednesday, at the company’s Q1 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said that WhatsApp has joined the exclusive group of apps having above 3 billion active users per month.

With this milestone, WhatsApp joins Facebook, its sibling app, to become one of the very few apps globally to reach the 3 billion user mark.

WhatsApp, which was founded in 2009 and purchased by Meta (later Facebook) for $19 billion in 2014, has expanded gradually without the need for advertisements or a membership fee. With the development into a vital global communications tool.

In just four years, the app has attracted another billion users, solidifying its domination in the worldwide messaging market, after reaching 2 billion monthly users in 2020.

The app is still free to use and ad-free despite its size. In 2020, it surpassed the 2 billion user milestone.

WhatsApp’s use of AI with Meta’s shift to artificial intelligence, this enormous user base is becoming more and more significant.

Susan Li, CFO of Meta, claims that within its app suite, WhatsApp is now the most active platform for Meta’s AI technologies. According to her, the majority of users currently communicate with Meta AI one-on-one.

This magnitude reaffirms WhatsApp’s position as a vital conduit for Meta’s more extensive aspirations in artificial intelligence. The messaging app continues to top Meta’s apps in terms of user engagement with its AI features, especially in one-on-one discussions, according to Susan Li, CFO of Meta.

People interact with Meta AI from a variety of starting points. Among our app family, WhatsApp continues to use Meta AI the most, according to Li.

The business believes that among its services, WhatsApp is the most active venue for Meta AI conversations.

Additionally, Zuckerberg noted that although WhatsApp is a strong gateway for AI in many regions of the world, adoption in the US is slow since consumers still prefer their traditional SMS apps.

In an effort to close that gap, Meta recently released a stand-alone Meta AI app aimed at American consumers, establishing it as the preferred personal AI assistant.

On WhatsApp, we’re in an alternate position in the United States than we are in the majority of the rest of the globe. As the primary personal AI that people use, I believe that the Meta AI app will be especially significant as a stand-alone product,” Zuckerberg stated.

WhatsApp Business has proven to be more useful for Meta’s corporate goals in addition to consumer use. WhatsApp Business, the app’s business-facing platform, was a key factor in Meta’s $510 million Q1 income from its app family.

A stand-alone Meta AI app has been released by Meta to increase its presence there. According to Zuckerberg, the new Meta AI app will be crucial for gaining traction in the United States, particularly in becoming the main AI helper for users, even though the messaging app has a solid basis elsewhere.

A new dashboard that enables companies to train Meta AI using their own data, such as material from their websites, WhatsApp profiles, Instagram pages, or Facebook accounts, is one of the AI tools that Meta is now incorporating into WhatsApp Business.

Additionally, the company is testing whether companies can use AI-powered chatbots to manage consumer interactions on the platform.

The consistent expansion of WhatsApp’s business-oriented platform was also emphasized by Meta. During the quarter, Meta’s app family made $510 million, of which WhatsApp Business was a major contributor.

Meta’s performance in the first quarter, according to Meta’s Q1 2025 data, its Family of apps—which includes Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads—recorded an average of 3.43 billion daily active people (DAP), a 6% rise from the previous year.

Additionally, the company revealed that the average price per ad rose by 10% year over year, while the number of ad impressions provided across its Family of Apps increased by 5%.

Meta’s quarterly revenue of $42.31 billion was a 16% year-over-year rise.

Meta is creating tools, such as a new dashboard and management system, to more smoothly incorporate AI into the business interface.

Businesses may use content from their websites, social media accounts, and WhatsApp presence to train Meta’s AI thanks to these functionalities.

These features, which would enable companies to have AI-driven discussions with clients right within the messaging app, are presently being tested by the company.

Our Opinions: Three billion people. Not only is that a significant milestone, but it also demonstrates that WhatsApp has evolved beyond a simple chat software. It permeates our communication, collaboration, and company operations.

WhatsApp is subtly changing into a digital marketplace, support desk, and notification center as Meta steps up its AI efforts.

With its clever tools and integrated business features, WhatsApp is quickly becoming the preferred platform for content, support, and shopping all without ever leaving the chat window.

This development might revolutionize markets where WhatsApp is the preferred app for everything from bank warnings to birthday greetings, enabling companies to grow without displacing consumers from the discussion.
