WhatsApp is introducing its own version of a status update function, which is comparable to Instagram Notes.

The new feature, like Instagram’s, allows Meta-owned messaging service users to submit a short text update that others can see. You may use this place to share what you’re doing or what’s new in your life.

The company has proposed that users who publish anything that could serve as a discussion starter, or that they use the space to explain why they are unable to speak at this time.

With the addition of the feature which may be unfamiliar to many, the firm noted in its blog post that the “About” feature, as it is known, was WhatsApp’s initial feature. Before WhatsApp concentrated on safe, private communications, it allowed people to easily send brief updates like this.

With WhatsApp relaunching the feature, making users’ “About” status more prominent than before. Others can now has the opportunity to view users status at the top of one-on-one chats with friends and users’ profiles. In addition, users can respond directly to someone’s About status in a chat.

By default, the WhatsApp About status, like Instagram Notes, disappears after a day.

However, the company claims that customers can control the timing to make it fade faster or stay longer than 24 hours. Users can also choose whether their About status is displayed only to their contacts or to the public at large. WhatsApp also features visibility settings, which allow users to restrict the update to specific contacts or publish it widely.

At debut, the tool is not as complete as Instagram Notes, which also supports short, looping videos and includes integrations for sharing the music user’s listening to. However, if the new function is widely adopted, such upgrades may be possible in the nearest future.

According to WhatsApp, the feature will be available to mobile users starting this week.

WhatsApp further explains that its reintroduction and enhancement of its original feature, had existed before the service focused on encrypted communications. The purpose is to provide users with a quick and easy option to publish information without making a full Status post.
