WhatsApp Tests AI to Rephrase Messages and Adjust Tone

On Wednesday, the Meta-owned business WhatsApp announced the launch of a new AI function that lets users reword, proofread, or change the tone of their conversations. This is a new tool from WhatsApp allows you to use AI to change the tone or reword your messages.

Using Meta’s Private Processing technology, the new tool, dubbed “Writing Help,” enables users to get AI-generated comments without Meta or WhatsApp having to view the original message or the proposed revisions. This implies that even if users utilise the new technology, messages on the site stay private.

Users of Writing Help can receive AI-generated recommendations and options that reword your message their communications or change its tone, making it appear more in a way that is more professional, humorous, encouraging, or rephrased.

Try it out by tapping the pencil symbol in the menu that appears beneath your message after you’ve started typing in a WhatsApp message and tapped the icon to the right of the text. From there, you may pick from a few options available and decide what you want the AI to do with your message.

This feature was seen by WhatsApp in a product graphic that showed the user’s initial message: “Please don’t leave dirty socks on the sofa.” “Funny” rewrites are then provided by the AI, like “Please don’t make the sofa a sock graveyard.” Breaking: Socks were discovered relaxing on the couch. “Hey, sock ninja, the laundry basket is that way!” and “Please move them!”

With this release, WhatsApp probably hopes that users would draft messages using its in-app technology instead of third-party applications like ChatGPT.

Naturally, not everyone will enjoy the new function because users probably prefer real, intimate chats with friends and family to texts produced by artificial intelligence. Rewriting an email using AI is one thing, but messaging your grandmother with it is quite another.

WhatsApp claims that touching the new pencil sign that shows up when composing a message in the app would enable users to access the new function.

The AI can accomplish all of this without Meta or WhatsApp ever accessing your message (or the AI’s recommendations), according to Meta, which claims to be employing its Private Processing technology.

Only English is supported, and the feature is accessible in the US and “several other countries,” according to a blog post from WhatsApp. According to the corporation, it intends to launch it in additional languages and nations “later this year.”

Answering the question of why you would want this is a little more difficult. Individuals who are not proficient in the English language will, I believe, benefit the most from it. In regards to the AI genuinely enhancing your sense of humour, well, judging from the samples WhatsApp has given, good luck.

This feature is entirely optional and will be turned off by default, according to WhatsApp. To use this function, users must enable it in the settings; doing so grants them complete control. Regarding availability, Meta stated that this functionality is first being made available in English in the US and a few other countries. Later this year, Meta intends to expand the availability of this service to areas with more language support.

WhatsApp intends to offer a practical and safe substitute for the built-in writing tools on phones or third-party AI writing tools by incorporating the Writing Help function straight into the app. This function makes very little sense because WhatsApp users typically keep things informal and use the service to interact with friends and family.
