WhatsApp Tests Auto-Download Quality Settings on Android

On WhatsApp, users might have the ability to choose between Standard and HD resolution.

A new function that gives consumers more choice over the calibre of media that is automatically downloaded to their devices is being tested by WhatsApp and this also means that users may be able to choose between normal and high-definition (HD) quality settings on the messaging platform, according to WABetaInfo. Information provided by a feature tracker indicates that they could be able to choose between normal and high-definition (HD) quality settings on the instant messaging platform. Some beta users reportedly have access to the new option, which was found in an Android app beta.

The functionality is being developed by Meta Platforms’ instant messaging client for eventual deployment on a future version of the app, according to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo. WhatsApp Beta for Android app version 2.25.18.11, which has been marked as a suitable upgrade, is where it was allegedly found.

Some beta users allegedly have access to the new option, which was found in the Android app’s beta version, 2.25.18.11. The feature tracker indicates that Meta’s messaging platform is working on the functionality, which will be included in a later app version.

When it launches, WhatsApp settings will provide a new Auto-download quality option. Go to Settings > Storage and data > Auto-download quality to locate it. A pop-up box will then appear, allowing users to choose between the Standard and HD quality options for the images and videos that will be saved to their device automatically and immediately.

The Standard quality option reduces the size of the file by compressing the media, according to the feature tracker. It is claimed to be more effective, take up less storage space, and speed up downloads. The HD setting, on the other hand, is said to maintain the image’s quality and detail but sacrificing more data needed for download and drive space.

WhatsApp for Android is supposed to automatically retrieve the smaller, compressed file by default if the media auto-download quality is set to standard. By manually accessing the media file on the app, recipients might still be able to get the HD version of the picture or video.

This feature expands on WhatsApp’s newly added dual-upload functionality. Because server-level compression is not possible, both regular and HD copies of the file are uploaded to WhatsApp servers by the sender. Nevertheless, the recipient’s device only downloads one quality of the chosen media file.

According to WABetaInfo, some beta testers who signed up through the Google Play Beta program can access the media auto-download quality option. More users should be able to access it in the upcoming weeks. Notably, although it hasn’t been released yet, Meta’s instant messaging client was reportedly testing comparable features for its iOS version in April.

The distinction between HD and standard quality.

According to the site, the Standard option is more effective because it uses less space and produces faster downloads by compressing the media to lower file size.

The HD setting, on the other hand, is said to maintain the image’s resolution and detail while requiring significantly more data for download and storage space.
