WhatsApp Tests ‘Strict Account Settings’ for Better Security

Whatsapp seems to be working on a new feature for its users to protect them from online threats and social media attacks.

With this new setting that shuts off specific functionalities on the messaging service, WhatsApp may eventually shield users from hackers. According to reports, it is intended to improve account security for individuals who might be vulnerable to targeted cyberattacks. A feature tracker on the most recent beta version of WhatsApp for Android discovered the functionality in development. Additionally, WhatsApp is developing the function that restricts the quantity of displayed messages (dms) that may be received from unidentified accounts. By identifying high activity from unknown senders, this tool helps eliminate spam and unwanted messages while also enhancing communication security.

The feature tracker WABetaInfo has found a new lockdown-style dubbed Strict account settings mode in the code for WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.33.4 that is intended to improve account security for consumers susceptible to targeted cyberattacks. Even if you have the most recent version installed from the Google Play store, you cannot test it because it is still under development.

According to the feature tracker, the new mode would provide users more power and eliminate the need to manually change numerous privacy settings by enabling them to implement stronger security settings with a single toggle. The discovery of the functionality indicates that WhatsApp intends to add it in a future Android version, although the feature is still in development and no release date has been announced.

It is anticipated that the Strict account settings feature would function as a sophisticated security measure by automatically activating important protections. By rerouting communications through WhatsApp’s servers, it will protect IP addresses during talks and stop possible location-based tracking. Blocking media and file attachments from unidentified senders will be another significant enhancement, preventing the automatic download of images, videos, or documents that can include malware or phishing URLs. Text messaging will be the only means of communication with these accounts, reducing the risk.

According to reports, WhatsApp also intends to include a feature that allows users to turn off link previews in chats. Typically, the software connects to related websites to produce previews, which may reveal a user’s IP address. By preventing link previews, this setting lowers the possibility of tracking efforts or indirect data leaks. This feature will now be a part of the stringent security mode, even though it is already available in WhatsApp’s privacy settings, to guarantee reliable and automatic protection for individuals who are more vulnerable.

In order to stop spam, frauds, and 0-click attack attempts, WhatsApp’s stringent security mode is anticipated to further mute calls from unsaved numbers. Additionally, only saved contacts will be able to send invitations, according to reports, restricting who can add users to group conversations. To protect privacy, profile information like a photo, status, and “last seen” timestamp will probably be limited to contacts only. The feature tracker states that security alerts would notify users when a contact’s encryption code changes, enabling them to confirm the legitimacy of discussions.

The blog post also stated that WhatsApp will implement two-step verification, which adds a PIN-based security layer to guard against identity theft and account hijacking. When combined, these features provide high-risk customers with a thorough protection system that guarantees account integrity, safety, and privacy. While current encryption and security measures will continue to protect all accounts by default, WhatsApp’s new mode, intended for those confronting sophisticated cyber threats, will be optional.
