WhatsApp Working On Shorter Disappearing Message Timers

A feature tracker has revealed that WhatsApp is apparently working on implementing new, shorter time limitations for Disappearing Messages. The rumour that WhatsApp is developing additional ways for messages to vanish, which might make conversations more private which was first introduced in November 2020, disappearing messages provide an extra degree of security and privacy.

At first, customers could choose whether to enable or disable the instant messaging service, and after a week, the texts would be automatically erased, however users currently have the option to have their communications expire after 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.

Eventually, WhatsApp’s short term messaging feature which let texts expire after as little as 24 hours allowed users to set time limitations which is one of the two shorter time options to be added to Whatsapp. The other shorter time option is 12 twelve hours. A future upgrade is anticipated to include shorter vanishing message times. Users would now have more control over how long their communications remain visible as a result of messages being able to be deleted much more quickly.

WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracker, found that the messaging app is now working on new, lower time limitations for its Disappearing Messages feature. At the moment, users can specify ephemeral message timers that last 24 hours, 7 days, or 90 days.

The article suggests that this could change in the future as the firm plans to introduce two new disappearing message timers, one hour and twelve hours. The additional timeframes in development were discovered by the feature tracker on the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.24.18. Even on the beta channel, users are unable to test these new timeframes as they are currently in development.

The tracker believes that WhatsApp may be trying to cater to users who prefer their texts to vanish as soon as possible after sending them by imposing a one-hour space limit on disappearing messages. It is believed to be useful when people want to exchange private information that could be dangerous if left out in the open for an extended period of time.

The messages could, however, vanish before the recipient has a chance to see them, which would disrupt the conversation. According to WABetaInfo, WhatsApp may provide a notice to users each time they choose the one-hour timer in order to keep them informed of such circumstances.

However, it is said that the 12-hour vanishing message timer limit attempts to balance privacy and convenience. This could provide both the sender and the recipient adequate time to reply to WhatsApp messages before they are removed.

It is claimed to work best in cases such as organising short-term chores, planning events, and exchanging comparatively less sensitive information where a user may wish to swiftly delete critical or confidential information, the one-hour timer might be helpful. Nevertheless, messages may disappear before the recipient has a chance to receive them. WhatsApp may benefit users by reminding them that messages will be deleted quickly when they choose the one-hour timer. According to the screenshot that the tracker posted, users would still be able to disable vanishing messages.

A decent balance between privacy and usability is offered by the 12-hour timer. It keeps discussions brief while allowing adequate time for users to read and respond to messages. For brief jobs or plans where communications don’t need to be saved for a long time, this option would be ideal.

In November 2020, WhatsApp first introduced the “Disappearing Messages” function, simultaneously releasing an update to all users worldwide. The only options available to users at the time were to enable or disable disappearing messages, and communications were automatically erased after seven days without the ability to specify a shorter or longer time limit. Later, an update introduced the 24-hour, seven-day, and 90-day options.

Although ordinary users are not yet able to access these additional timeframe settings, they were observed in development on the Android WhatsApp beta. An upcoming update may feature these.

If users wish to preserve their conversations indefinitely, they can still disable fading messages. WhatsApp hopes to provide users more options to safeguard their privacy and improve message management by introducing these new timings.

WhatsApp is testing additional features, such as voice messaging after missed calls and simpler methods for selecting and copying messages, in addition to deleting messages. All of these upgrades demonstrate WhatsApp’s efforts to enhance secure and convenient communication.
