Why the Internet of Things narrative has to change

Wojtek Borowicz, a community evangelist at Estimote, independent writer, and firm supporter of the Internet of Things (IoT), urges for a shift in the narrative surrounding this concept.

The term IoT has become widespread among tech enthusiasts, savvy individuals, and futurists. However, the public understanding and media portrayal of IoT is flawed, chiefly focusing on smart gadgets and overlooking the paradigm-shifting potential of this technology. Addressing these misunderstandings necessitates a correct redirection of the narrative.

IoT is not merely about physical devices. The undue focus on the latest IoT appliances like smart bulbs and sensors infringes upon the core of IoT. Such narrow interpretations disregard the importance of collaborations like the joint creation of HyperCat, a Web platform for consolidated IoT data processing by BT, IBM, ARM, and over 40 other companies. Essentially, it is the Internet that holds the key to the true essence of IoT.

While the popular perception of IoT is fixed on specific ‘smart’ devices, the exact revolution lies in the unified frameworks with open APIs. It’s the opportunity for anyone equipped with the right education and tools to tether something to this network that offers the real change.

The Internet, in the context of IoT, represents infrastructure as well as two pivotal elements: Data and Access. The enormous volumes of data produced by billions of devices worldwide and the access to this data via open APIs are fundamental.

The utility of data generated by these devices is dependent on the level of access provided. This data only gains value when developers and businesses get the ability to harness it, paving the way for new, context-rich internet services.

The misleading conception of IoT as an upcoming trend needs to be rectified. This advanced technology is here, already outnumbering the global human population. The mobile internet revolution also began like this, reminiscent of where IoT stands today.

Most people are surprisingly oblivious to the ubiquity of the Internet in their daily lives. From sharing your reactions to Game of Thrones finale through your Smart TV to streaming your PlayStation gaming sessions on Twitch or keeping track of workouts using an app like NikeFuel- you’re an integral part of IoT.

The crux of the IoT conversation isn’t about the latest smart home devices. It’s about forming a systematic data collection and processing structure, providing developers with this data access, and constructing valuable services for users. The dialogue should emphasize the creation of industry standards, nurturing of burgeoning ecosystems, and cybersecurity assurance for the future plethora of IoT devices.
