Why Your Organization Needs a Cloud-Based Disaster Recovery Plan

Organizations have begun to comprehend the fundamental importance of protecting their data, applications, and workflows against unforeseen disasters. A comprehensive disaster recovery (DR) plan remains paramount to prevent drastic consequences such as prolonged business operation interruptions or irreversible data loss—events that could significantly derail an organization’s routine functions. The U.S. Small Business Administration has noted that about 25% of businesses do not manage to reopen post-disaster.

Companies should anticipate these disasters and commence their disaster preparedness procedures in advance rather than waiting for a disaster to hit. The speed and unpredictability of tragedies like Hurricane Sandy or the Fukushima earthquake underline the need for a solid disaster recovery framework, which can significantly enhance a business’s ability to rebound quickly after a disaster.

Most companies today rely on regular backups, typically every 24 hours or more. However, this method could be insufficient during a significant disaster, leading to hours or even days of data loss and a similar duration to restore from those backups. Advanced DR protection services, such as continuous replication, offer a higher level of protection. These services provide firms with the opportunity to establish an exact recovery point measurable in mere hours or minutes, and offer quick application rebooting rather than restoring them from various storage locations. Despite the clear advantages, many small to medium-sized businesses view these advanced DR solutions as unattainable, often due to the perceived complexity or cost.

There are DR services designed to simplify the process, but many merely transfer the complexity to a professional services team who handles the DR process on behalf of their clients. This strategy frequently results in cost escalation, as clients are charged for both the infrastructure and the personnel hours.

Yet, there is emerging potential to make disaster recovery quicker, more cost-effective, and simpler for all enterprises. This can be realized by adopting the principles of large-scale, standardized hybrid cloud computing. Given the transformative impact of cloud computing on IT organizations, it is not only logical but also crucial to incorporate disaster recovery into this digital shift.
