Microsoft is finally bringing a built-in screen recording feature to Windows. The built-in screen recorder will be added to the Snipping Tool app (version 11.2211.35.0) for Windows 11. The company has started to roll out this update to Insiders in the Dev Channel.

“We know that Snipping Tool is a favourite among the Insider community, so we are very excited to introduce a built-in screen recorder with this update! Snipping Tool has always made it quick and easy to capture and share content from your PC, and with screen recording built-in, we are expanding these capabilities to even more types of content.” According to Principal Program Manager Lead – Windows Inbox Apps, Dave Grochocki.

Before this, Windows users have had to use the Xbox Game Bar or other parties, but now the Snipping Tool which is the Microsoft screenshot tool will offer screen recording as well.

Dave Grochocki said “Snipping Tool has always made it quick and easy to capture and share content from your PC, and with screen recording built-in, we are expanding these capabilities to even more types of content.”

To use this new tool, users are required to open the Snipping Tool app and select the record option. The Snipping Tool which offers rectangular mode, window mode, full screen mode and freeform mode can be launched from the keyboard with Win + Shift + S.

The new record option allows you to record an entire screen or just a cropped section.

Before beginning screen recording, Windows 11 users will be able to choose and adjust the area of the screen that they intend to record, and after recording, users can preview it before saving or sharing it with others.

This region selection feature will prove useful to those who only want to capture an app instead of the entire display.

Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel will start getting access to the updated Snipping Tool as of December 8. However, not all Insiders will receive the update right away.

Grochocki has pointed out that the preview feature does have some issues, including “a slight delay between when you click ‘Start’ and when the recording begins.” Also, the Snipping Tool app window does not restore when initiating a new snip from within the app. In spite of this, we can still say it is great news that Windows will finally have a built-in screen recorder.

Microsoft has not made any mentions as to whether this new feature will be available for Windows 10 users.
