Streaming service Netflix, on Tuesday, announced that its viral series “Squid Game” has become its most-watched series. The announcement came via tweet and according to Netflix, the successful series has attracted 111 million views globally since it was released on September 17th.

According to Netflix, the South Korean series is its biggest series launch of all time. It is Netflix’s first-ever show to surpass 100 million views in the first month. Netflix’s most viewed show was “Bridgerton’ which held the record of 82 million views in 28 days after its launch. “Squid Game”, which is a story about survival games has easily beaten the record of the most-viewed show previously held by “Bridgerton”.

Netflix’s “Squid Game” became a viral hit in its home country South Korea and numerous countries across the globe. It was so successful that a South Korean broadband provider sued the streaming service after the show caused a spike in traffic.

It is pertinent to know that the count of 111 million doesn’t mean that 111 million people saw the show from the beginning to the end. Netflix took account of accounts of users who tuned into the show for at least two minutes; in other words, at least two minutes of the show was viewed 111 million times. “Squid Game” features people in debt that are brought together to compete for a grand price worth billions of won. They are made to play traditional Korean children games and are killed by masked men dressed in red jumpsuits when they lose.

Netflix which has seen a post-pandemic decline has been investing heavily in foreign language movies, many of which have had huge commercial success. Some of its successful foreign-language shows include “The Platform” and “Money Heist”.

South African telecommunications company Telkom SA recently announced that streaming platform Netflix will no longer be available on its set-top box from October. Netflix has also confirmed new deals with MultiChoice that will make its streaming service available on an imminent Decoder that the provider of Africa’s biggest paid TV services – GoTV and DStv plan to launch.
