Over the past few years, the African continent has experienced a remarkable surge in technological advancement and penetration. However, this broad sweep of growth across the continent has been somewhat uneven. From the boundless deserts of the North to the rich plains of the South, some countries still have considerable strides to make in developing the vital infrastructure needed to drive this growth. A region that stands out from the rest in reaching significant milestones of progress is East Africa.

Noteworthy technological advancements in East Africa range from the implementation of efficient mobile payment systems in Kenya to the adoption of 4G technology advancements in Rwanda. These accomplishments signal a dynamic shift in technological infrastructure and innovation.

The recent World Bank report on African Tech hubs provides important insights into this evolving landscape. There are now more than 90 active Tech hubs dotted across the African continent. These vibrant tech ecosystems serve as pivotal platforms where startups can mingle, bounce ideas, and steadily cultivate their budding businesses. You can view the World Bank’s tech hub map here for a more detailed understanding.

A prime example of such a thriving ecosystem is the iHub in Kenya. This place serves as an exciting melting pot where tech startups converge and brainstorm to craft transformative, value-adding services.

In a noteworthy recognition of African innovation, Bloomberg had previously published an article highlighting the Kenyan Mpesa mobile payment system. The article argued that most western firms in the same line of business are merely emulating this trailblazing African technology, a testament to its effectiveness and efficiency.

As Africa continues to grow and adapt to the evolving digital era, these tech hubs will serve as a fundamental driving force for more technological advancements and startups. With the continued dedication to developing technology and infrastructure, perhaps the phenomenal growth of East Africa will catalyze similar progression across the continent. In exciting times like these, the sky is the limit for Africa’s tech hub sprouting.
