X Agrees To Halt Using EU User Data For Grok AI Training

X agrees to not use some EU user data to train AI chatbot | ReutersA court in Ireland has heard testimony refraining social media site X from utilising user personal data obtained from EU users before their ability to revoke consent to train its AI systems. Since a majority of American internet companies have their EU operations in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission serves as the primary EU regulator. The commission has requested an order prohibiting X from processing user data to develop, train, or improve its artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The Elon Musk-owned company X has stated that it gives customers the option to control whether the platform’s artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok, can use any publicly posted content. Users must uncheck a box in their privacy settings to opt out. Grok is a new enhanced search function driven by xAI’s cutting-edge large language model (LLM) (Grok-1) that is available to X Premium and Premium+ members.

Judge Leonie Reynolds, however, stated that it was evident that X started using the data of EU users to train its AI systems on May 7 and only started providing an opt-out choice on July 16. According to her, not every user was initially able to access the feature.EU AI Regulation - Usercentrics Guide To The EU AI Act

The data gathered from EU users between May 7 and August 1 will not be used until the court rules on the Irish Data Protection Commission’s (DPC) ruling, according to a representative for the website formerly known as Twitter. The court heard that X’s attorneys must submit challenge papers to the suspension order by September 4.

The X Global Government Affairs account on social media stated in a statement on Wednesday that the regulator’s requested order was “unwarranted, overboard, and singles out X without any justification.”

The regulator’s worries over X’s use of the data come after Meta Platforms decided in June to postpone the rollout of its Meta AI models across Europe after receiving advice to do so from the Irish DPC.

Google, a division of Alphabet, also consented to postpone and modify the Gemini AI chatbot earlier this year after conferring with the Irish regulator.
