December 18th, 2025, X (previously Twitter) discontinued its Mac client and took it down from the Mac client Store last year. This essentially eliminates native app support for the platform and comes after the loss of the specific macOS app last year. At the time, the business directed users to the iPad version of the game, which Apple Silicon users could still download and install on the Mac game Store.
However, X is currently preventing users from installing the app’s iPad version on macOS. This basically signifies that they have completely abandoned the Mac.
Recall that running iPhone and iPad apps directly on your Mac is just one of Apple Silicon’s numerous advantages. However, developers can choose not to participate and prevent you from doing this. That’s exactly what X is doing.
The end to installation supports also implies that the support disability for developers also implies that developers can choose not to run iPad apps on Apple Silicon Macs, even though it is a built-in feature. This option has now been used by X, and the iPad version’s Mac App Store listing now indicates that macOS is not compatible.
For the time being, if you already have the iPad version loaded on your Mac, it might still work, but several essential functionality and features, like search and link-opening, have become increasingly erratic or malfunctioning.
For recommended alternations and for complete functioning, X now advises all Mac users to utilise the platform through a web browser (such Safari or Chrome).
According to some users, the reason behind this is that, the iPad app on Mac has reportedly been “falling apart,” with numerous “Uh oh, an error was encountered” notifications and broken search functions, though X has not officially acknowledged this.
These articles advise utilising the online version and explain why X has prevented Macs from installing iPad apps.
The Mac App Store listing for the iPad version of X now states that the app is not compatible with Macs, as some users on the platform have noticed.
The X app’s iPad version had been steadily breaking down. There is a total breakdown in the search function. The X app nearly always displays an error notice when you click on links: “Uh oh, an error was encountered.”
For the time being, you can keep using the X iPad app if you have it installed on your Mac, or at least use the functional sections. Regretfully, you must utilise the web version of the platform in a browser like Chrome or Safari in order to fully utilise it.
Among the many foolish choices made by X’s present leadership is the complete abandonment of the Mac (along with the termination of third-party Mac programs).
While fixing some of the aforementioned flaws, X might have deactivated the iPad app’s Mac support. But for the time being, that’s merely speculation.
