YouTube Launches AI-powered Teen Protection Features

In the US, YouTube is introducing a new function that uses machine learning to determine a user’s age without requesting any personal data. This is a new AI tool which will help to keep teens safe on its platform. While turning off features like tailored advertising, the Alphabet-owned business claims it is implementing the same technology used in other areas to show content on the site that is suitable for younger people.

This means that starting August 13, 2025, the video giant will use artificial intelligence to identify users under 18 and add safety tools to make the online experience better for young viewers. The feature is made to function even in cases when younger users have circumvented the platform’s age-based safeguards by entering a false birthday.

The  AI will guess a user’s age by looking at what they watch, the kind of content they like, and how long they’ve had their account. It doesn’t just rely on the age users enter when signing up.

When this new AI feature spots a teen user, safety features turn on automatically. Personalized ads are turned off, so teens won’t see ads based on their browsing habits. The system also helps stop them from watching the same type of content over and over, protecting them from harmful content.

As no AI is perfect, YouTube has put in place a system where If  it incorrectly estimates a user to be under 18, they will have the option to verify that they are 18 or over, such as using a credit card or a government ID. Users flagged as teens by mistake can prove their real age with a government ID, credit card, or even a selfie. This verification process ensures adults aren’t restricted while maintaining protection for actual minors.

This update comes as parents and lawmakers push for better online safety for kids. YouTube has been working with pros to build features that encourage healthy screen habits for teens.

While the system helps protect young users, it also brings up concerns about privacy. The AI studies what people watch and how they use the platform to guess their age, meaning YouTube collects detailed user data. Still, YouTube says this is needed to protect teens who might lie about their age when signing up.

Parents may find peace of mind knowing their teenagers have additional protections in place.

YouTube will soon bring this AI age-check system to more countries. As the system improves and gets more data, it will get better at telling who is a teen. This shows that big tech companies are changing how they keep kids safe online.

YouTube further states that the age estimation feature is intended to determine the age of a YouTube user in a blog post outlining the feature that is being made available to “a small set of users in the US.” Because the platform uses signals to estimate users’ ages, it is based on artificial intelligence (AI) and does not require users to provide any personal information.

YouTube will immediately activate its digital well-being features, which are intended to stop excessive use, as soon as it detects that an account is being used by a teenager. YouTube will also restrict “repetitive views” of content pertaining to physical appearance and weight, and it will stop some kinds of videos from showing up in its suggested videos. Teenagers’ access to personalized advertisements would also be blocked.

YouTube has claimed to give users a way to confirm their age, however AI-powered systems can also make mistakes when categorizing accounts based on signals. In order to reclassify their account as an adult, adults who were mistakenly classified as teenagers might give the site a government ID card or a credit card. YouTube will restore access to short and restricted videos once the issue has been fixed.

Months have passed since YouTube CEO Neal Mohan first revealed the age estimation feature would be available to users in February. In September 2024, the firm implemented content limits and supervised accounts as part of its prior efforts to restrict the content accessible to younger users. According to YouTube, the same feature will eventually be made available in other markets.
