Google Plans to Consolidate YouTube Red and Google Play Music into a Single Service

According to recent reports, tech giant Google is set to merge its digital platforms, YouTube Red and Google Play Music into a unified service. This development comes partially in acknowledgment that YouTube Red, Google’s ad-free service that allows users to save videos for offline viewing, has yet to fully resonate with its user base.

The predicament Google faces lies in the existence of multiple platforms offering similar services. YouTube Red currently offers access to Google Play Music as part of its $9.99 monthly subscription package. Additionally, there is YouTube Music, a separate platform from YouTube Red, which is accessible to all users, further adding to the confusion.

The strategic amalgamation of YouTube Red and Google Play Music appears to be a logical move, especially in light of Google’s new $35 per month YouTube TV service, which promises to provide YouTube Red features as part of its offerings. In essence, this transformation implies that purchasing a future subscription to YouTube TV will include access to the restructured service born from the fusion of YouTube Red and Google Play Music.

In a statement to The Verge, Google commented, “Music is very important to Google, and we’re evaluating how to bring together our music offerings to deliver the best possible product for our users, music partners, and artists. Nothing will change for users today, and we’ll provide plenty of notice before any changes are made.”

As things currently stand, there is uncertainty surrounding the name and overall presentation of the integrated service. Furthermore, it remains to be seen if it would be offered as a complementary feature of YouTube TV. Regardless of these unknowns, this monumental merger signals Google’s intention to streamline its services and optimize the user experience.
