YouTube is testing a video carousel of search results that shows up in Google’s AI-powered search interface, AI Overviews. The massive video streaming company is testing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to display video snippets in a carousel that may be pertinent to the user’s query. The Gemini-powered tool will now display YouTube video snippets rather than text-based responses, thereby broadening the use case of AI Overviews. According to the corporation, the technology will only support questions on select themes while it is being tested.
According to a Google representative who verified the test with ADWEEK, videos that are pertinent to searches like “best noise cancelling headphones” or “museums to visit in San Francisco” will appear. The representative refused to provide any additional program details.
Google described the new feature and the YouTube testing process on its support page. At the moment, only a portion of US YouTube Premium users have access to it. After being granted access to AI Overviews, qualified users can utilize YouTube’s search box to type a query and read the AI-generated snapshot-style summaries that appear at the top of the results page. At the moment, the tool only allows English-language questions on specific subjects.
On YouTube, users will see a carousel of videos at the top of the search results page. Clips from YouTube videos that answer the user’s search query will be included in the carousel. When using YouTube’s search function, Google said that AI Overviews will offer “another way to discover content” and “discover topics and information” associated with the search query. As platforms battle for users’ attention, Google’s next effort in the AI search war is YouTube’s entry into AI Overviews. Startups like Perplexity and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI are negotiating content agreements with publishers to add more current answers to AI-generated responses, while Google is relying on video to make search results more dynamic.
Google Search has had a function similar to this for a while. The search giant frequently presents time-stamped YouTube videos that begin at the very moment the information is given when users are looking for a topic that might be best presented in a video.
For instance, a user would not have to watch the introduction or the section where another broken chair element is being fixed if they were searching for a do-it-yourself (DIY) guide on how to fix a chair with a broken leg.
In an effort to make it simpler for users to navigate through videos, Google has included “key moments” beneath movies on the Google Search results page. These moments allow viewers to view numerous clips along with a brief description and time stamp. YouTube has not disclosed specifics regarding the operation of its AI Overviews findings, but it is probably going to operate similarly.
The business has made it clear that not all queries will display AI Overviews. At the moment, YouTube restricts the use of the feature to times when users search for things to buy, locations, or suggestions in those areas.
Additionally, Google is developing a special “AI Mode” in Search that responds to user searches with a full page of AI-powered results. The business now runs advertisements in AI Overviews and has stated that it intends to launch ads in AI Mode as well.
