
Google has signed a major geothermal power deal with Fervo Energy, and the real story is not only clean energy. It is the growing pressure AI data centres are putting on the power grid.
Fervo announced a 396-megawatt power purchase agreement with Google for electricity from its Cape Station enhanced geothermal project in Utah. The project is expected to come online in 2028 and is designed to support a potential Google data centre in the state.
The deal also gives Google an option to expand its offtake by about 600MW, taking the total close to 1GW by June 2030 if the project, approvals and commercial conditions line up. That is a huge amount of power for one technology customer, and it shows how far the AI infrastructure race has moved beyond chips alone.
For years, Big Tech companies bought wind and solar contracts to match their electricity use and support climate goals. That still matters. But AI is changing the energy equation because large data centres need power that is not only clean, but also available around the clock.
This is where geothermal becomes interesting. Unlike solar and wind, geothermal can provide steadier power because it draws heat from underground. The U.S. Department of Energy describes enhanced geothermal systems as technology that can create or improve underground reservoirs to produce geothermal energy in more places.
Fervo is trying to turn that promise into an industrial product. Its Cape Station project is built around a repeatable development model that the company says can scale. Google is betting that this kind of clean, firm power can help support data-centre growth without making its climate promises impossible to keep.
Google and Fervo have history here. Their partnership began with Project Red in Nevada, a commercial pilot that brought carbon-free geothermal power onto the grid. They later worked with NV Energy on a 115MW geothermal agreement, which Google framed as part of a cleaner way to support data-centre demand.
The Utah deal is much larger. It suggests Google is no longer treating next-generation geothermal as a science project. It is becoming part of the company’s data-centre planning.
That matters because AI infrastructure is now pulling the technology industry into energy politics. We recently wrote about how AI data centres are creating a compute and power gap, and this agreement is another example of the same shift. The question is no longer only which company has the best model. It is also which company can secure enough electricity to run it.
Nvidia’s dominance has made chips the most visible part of the AI boom, but recent stories around AI cloud deals and infrastructure scrutiny show that compute is becoming a larger financial and physical ecosystem. Power is now one of the most important parts of that ecosystem.
The local impact will also matter. Fervo says the deal will unlock new electricity capacity without cost to existing ratepayers and that the companies are committed to community engagement and local investment. Those promises will be tested, because large energy and data-centre projects often face questions around land use, water, noise, transmission lines and who really benefits.
There is a useful contrast here with the data-centre backlash building in other parts of the United States. Communities want jobs and tax revenue, but they also worry about power demand, infrastructure strain and quality of life. A cleaner power source does not automatically solve every local concern, but it may make the AI buildout easier to defend.
For Africa, the lesson is also important. Countries talking about AI sovereignty and local cloud capacity will eventually run into the same hard truth. Data centres need reliable electricity. Recent plans such as Cybastion Cameroon AI data centre show that the continent’s AI infrastructure conversation cannot be separated from power.
Google’s Fervo agreement therefore belongs in the same category as chips, cloud, data centres and model launches. It is part of the invisible machinery behind AI. The companies that secure clean, reliable and scalable power will have an advantage over those that only talk about models.
The AI race is becoming an energy race. Google knows this, and its Fervo deal is a sign that Big Tech is preparing for a future where intelligence is limited not only by algorithms or semiconductors, but by electrons.
