OpenAI still has Sam Altman as its public face, but the company’s day-to-day centre of gravity appears to be shifting toward Greg Brockman. That matters because OpenAI is no longer just a research lab with a famous chatbot. It is becoming a giant commercial AI company preparing investors, customers and regulators for what comes next.

The Verge reports that Brockman, OpenAI’s co-founder and president, has taken on a much larger operational role as several senior executives have left. The report says he now oversees major product and commercial areas including ChatGPT, Codex, infrastructure, data science, growth and ads, making him the most important operating figure inside OpenAI after Altman.

This is partly a leadership story, but it is also a business story. OpenAI is under pressure to turn massive user attention into revenue, defend its enterprise business against Anthropic, monetize consumer AI more effectively and prepare for a possible public listing. In that environment, the person who controls product and scaling has real power.

The executive turnover has been notable. Business Insider recently listed 14 executives who have left OpenAI in 2026, including senior figures across applications, sales, product, safety, marketing and infrastructure. Some left to start companies, some shifted roles first, and others exited during wider restructuring. Whatever the individual reasons, the pattern points to a company being rebuilt while it is already under intense public scrutiny.

Brockman’s role makes sense inside that context. He has long been seen as one of OpenAI’s most technical operators, with early experience scaling systems and a Stripe background that fits the move from research to product. If OpenAI wants ChatGPT, Codex, enterprise tools, ads and future hardware to behave like a coherent business, someone has to force those pieces into a single operating rhythm.

The risk is concentration. When one founder takes on more of the company while others leave, execution can become faster, but internal debate can narrow. That matters in AI because product decisions are not only commercial. They affect safety, privacy, political influence, cybersecurity and how billions of people interact with information.

The timing also lines up with OpenAI’s bigger consumer ambitions. The company is experimenting with ChatGPT monetization in India, pushing coding agents through Codex, and still carrying the Jony Ive hardware story. These bets need focus. They also need discipline because OpenAI cannot chase every shiny consumer idea while spending heavily on compute and competing with Google, Meta, Anthropic and xAI.

For Altman, the shift may be useful. He can stay focused on capital, policy, partnerships, long-term strategy and the public narrative, while Brockman drives the internal machinery. That kind of split is common in fast-scaling companies. The question is whether OpenAI can make it work while also managing lawsuits, safety concerns, employee departures and massive infrastructure demands.

This is where OpenAI’s story becomes similar to the rest of Big Tech. The company’s most important challenge is no longer only model quality. It is organizational quality. Can it ship products, retain leaders, satisfy enterprise customers, keep consumers engaged, handle ads carefully, and maintain enough trust around safety? That is a much harder test than winning a benchmark.

If Brockman can turn OpenAI’s many moving pieces into a durable product business, the company will look stronger ahead of any listing. If the executive exits continue and decision-making becomes too concentrated, investors may ask whether OpenAI is scaling faster than its management structure can handle. Either way, Brockman’s expanded role is now part of the OpenAI story.
