Microsoft is Going All-In on AI to Up The Gaming Experience

Microsoft is taking gaming to the next level in Windows 11. The upcoming 24H2 update, slated for the second half of 2024, will introduce some game-changing (pun intended!) AI features to enhance the gaming experience like never before.

Headlining is a brand-new feature called “Automatic Super Resolution” (Auto SR). Sounds fancy, but what does it actually do? In essence, Auto SR uses the power of AI to boost a game’s framerate and upscale visuals to make them look crisper. It’s similar to NVIDIA’s acclaimed DLSS technology, which also leverages AI to improve in-game performance.

But there’s a key difference with Microsoft’s solution. While DLSS relies primarily on your GPU for its magic, Auto SR can tap into dedicated AI processing units (NPUs) that the latest PCs are equipped with. This allows Auto SR to run more efficiently and effectively. Although it’s unclear if non-NPU systems can still take advantage of the feature.

Microsoft isn’t stopping there though. More broadly, Windows 11 version 24H2 promises to deliver next-gen AI capabilities that transform your entire computing experience. We’re talking an upgraded Copilot feature that understands context across applications. The ability to identify text and images on-screen at any time. And even searching everything you do in natural language.

These productivity-focused tools hint at a future where our PCs get smarter by interacting with us. But gaming isn’t being left behind – with Auto SR leading the charge when 24H2 drops later this year.

We have talked about how the upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update will introduce Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR) to enhance in-game graphics using AI. But gaming is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Microsoft’s ambitious AI plans. The tech giant is essentially integrating intelligence into everything you do on a PC.

Let’s start with Copilot – Microsoft’s AI pair programmer that helps developers code faster and with fewer bugs. The 24H2 update will take Copilot to the next level with the ability to understand context across applications. For example, Copilot may suggest code in Visual Studio based on an Excel spreadsheet you were just working in. Doing away with app silos is a game-changer.

But it goes far beyond Copilot too. Microsoft is leveraging AI so Windows itself can identify text or images on your screen at any time. It then indexes everything in the background, allowing you to search your activity timeline using completely natural language queries.

Some may think that sounds creepy. But there will doubtless be strict data governance to preserve privacy. And think how magical it would feel to simply ask your PC: “Hey, show me that chart I designed last week while browsing product ideas.” Without even remembering which program or files you used!

Back to gaming – how does Auto SR size up against more established AI solutions like NVIDIA’s DLSS? Well both techniques use machine learning to boost framerates and resolution. However, DLSS relies on tensor cores in NVIDIA RTX graphics cards, while Auto SR taps dedicated NPU hardware for more efficient AI processing. Early indications suggest performance could surpass DLSS in some instances. But we’ll have to wait and see!

One thing’s for sure – between revving up games with Auto SR and infusing intelligence into mundane tasks, Microsoft is pursuing an AI-first strategy with Windows 11. The future of personal computing has never looked more exciting!
