We live in an age where there are some pretty incredible technologies being tinkered with such as AI, but perhaps one of the most interesting concepts is the metaverse. This is both a concept but also technology being developed by Meta (the company behind Facebook). If it is successful, it will open up a world of new possibilities for many different industries, including iGaming and online casinos.

In this article, we take a look at the metaverse and what it entails. We also discuss whether it could impact the online casino landscape and how it could be both a positive and negative.

What is the metaverse?

The metaverse is essentially a concept. It is an evolution of the internet that revolves around connectivity using virtual reality (VR). The metaverse aims to create virtual worlds that people can explore and interact with and have similar experiences to what they do in real life.

A great example, if not a little over-the-top, is the film Ready Player One. In this movie, the virtual world that features largely in the game depicted could be compared to what the metaverse strives to be – a virtual place not constrained by physical limitations where people can come together, play games, buy things, hang out and even conduct business.

Some companies like Meta are already developing metaverse technologies, but as they stand, they are pretty basic. If the concept does flourish, it is quite easy to see how online casinos could be a big part of the metaverse. You can learn more about the metaverse in this handy guide.

How could the metaverse negatively impact online casinos?

While the thought of playing at online casinos using a VR headset is incredibly thrilling, there are some potential drawbacks that need to be overcome too, such as:

Difficult to implement

The scale and implementation could be a major drawback as online casino companies would literally have to do everything from scratch.

To create a VR casino, they would need a huge team of experts and specialists all of which are totally different to the web designers and programmers they are currently working with. It would require an entire rethink of their business model and take huge cash investments to pull off properly.

Accessibility

Let’s face it, how many people do you know who actually own a VR headset? Not many I would imagine. Only one of my friends has a headset and they are a hardcore gamer. Most casual casino players simply wouldn’t be interested in getting a headset and it could take some clever marketing and time for metaverse casinos to catch on.

Lack of game variety

When you log on to an online casino, you have access to thousands of games at your fingertips. There is never any chance of getting bored and the metaverse would need to emulate this to be successful. People would quickly log off and go elsewhere if a metaverse casino online had one blackjack and roulette game for example!

How could the metaverse be positive for online casinos?

It’s not all doom and gloom though – if casinos were implemented in the metaverse, the potential could be amazing and the gaming experience would be like nothing else.

Immersive gaming experience

Imagine putting on your VR headset and walking through the doors or a virtual casino from the comfort of your living room. You don’t have to dress up – instead you can just customize your virtual metaverse avatar. Nor do you have to drive miles to get to a casino. Just plop your headset on and your good to go.

You then use your VR controls to walk through the casino and head to the floor where you spy a busy blackjack table you want to play at. This is the kind of VR experience that gamers and casino enthusiasts dream about!

A VR casino experience in the metaverse could be groundbreaking.

Social gaming aspects

Building on the above point, the metaverse could also unlock the social aspect of casinos too. This simply isn’t present at online casinos and the only way you can interact with people is through live dealer games.

Imagine if you could talk to other casino players, walk around the lobby and strike up conversations, and banter as you play at the VR tables – this would make casino gaming much more than simply about winning money.

This all hinges on the success of the metaverse and if the concept ever takes off fully. In its current iteration, things are pretty basic and no company has really had a huge success or shown that the technology is worthwhile. Of course, Meta has made inroads with the technology, but it still looks pretty rough and needs a lot of work before it could be used for online casinos.
