By announcing the full completion of interconnection with all major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Nigeria, Vitel Wireless Limited, the country’s first mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), has accomplished yet another landmark.
Announcing the successful completion of interconnectivity with all major Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Nigeria, Vitel Wireless Limited (Vitel Wireless), Nigeria’s first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) received a dedicated number series (0712) from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). And this makes them the first mobile virtual network operator to get this designation.
The Vitel Wireless customers can now make and receive calls with anyone on Globacom (Glo), MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, and 9mobile Nigeria thanks to this innovation. Additionally, it sets a new standard for Nigeria’s telecom industry since it is the first time an MVNO in the nation has successfully connected with all of the main MNOs.
In Nigeria, the biggest market and most populated country in Africa, Vitel Wireless is still at the forefront of developing a vibrant MVNO industry after the NCC licensed 46 MVNOs. The company has already accomplished a number of historic firsts, including becoming the first MVNO to introduce a location awareness network in Africa, the first to reveal a planned statewide rollout plan, and the first to issue a numbering plan and national and international routing codes.
Vitel Wireless Chairman and CEO Kenneth Emeka Nwabueze, MFR, stated, “We are building momentum for our big launch.” We take pride in setting an example for others to follow and demonstrating what is feasible for MVNOs. We are creating new opportunities where none previously existed by utilizing our years of experience in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
Indirect routing through third-party providers and direct fiber connections with certain MNOs were used to achieve interconnectivity. Engineers from Vitel Wireless, Wireless Technology Labs (WTL), and Interconnect Clearinghouse Nigeria (ICN) worked together with engineers from MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile to achieve this milestone.
In order to achieve this interconnectivity and move the official launch of the Vitel Wireless nationwide network closer to reality, Nwabueze said, “We would like to thank the regulatory body, the Nigerian Communications Commission, for their prompt interventions and guidance.”
With a complete rollout scheduled for July 2025, the corporation began a statewide trial program in May 2025 with the goal of providing next-generation mobile services to millions of Nigerians.
