To increase digital inclusion and connection in distant places, telecom behemoth Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to deploy Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet services throughout the continent.
Airtel claims that SpaceX has obtained operational permits in nine of the fourteen African nations in which it conducts business. The remaining five countries are presently undergoing licensing.
Through the partnership, Airtel Africa’s connectivity infrastructure will incorporate Starlink’s satellite technology to increase internet access to rural and underserved populations, including small companies, schools, and health facilities.
Additionally, the satellite for coverage on mobile devices in which the businesses intend to use satellite backhaul to increase mobile network coverage in remote areas.
Sunil Taldar, CEO of Airtel Africa, stated, “This partnership with SpaceX is a significant step to demonstrate our continued commitment to advancing Africa’s digital economy through strategic investments and partnerships.”
“Even in the most remote regions of Africa, next-generation satellite connectivity will guarantee that every person, company, and community has dependable and reasonably priced voice and data connectivity.”
The collaboration gives SpaceX access to Airtel’s vast ground infrastructure throughout the continent, which aids in expanding Starlink’s reach and advancing Africa’s larger digital transformation objectives.
SpaceX’s VP of Starlink Business Operations, Chad Gibbs, stated: that “Collaborating with the Airtel team to enhance our direct offering throughout Africa makes perfect sense for our business, as they have played a significant role in Africa’s telecom story.”
Starlink is presently offered in more than 20 African markets, and this agreement represents a closer partnership between the two businesses to promote economic development, digital inclusion, and dependable internet connectivity throughout the continent.
Particularly in a market like Nigeria, where Starlink is gaining more traction at the expense of the other ISPs, including the MNOs, the Airtel-SpaceX partnership shows that mobile network operators are now searching for ways to work with satellite companies, which many have viewed as competition.
In an effort to extend its services to distant areas throughout its operational market, MTN Group also revealed last year that it was in negotiations with a number of satellite service providers, including Elon Musk’s Starlink.
The business specifically stated that enterprise-grade testing for SpaceX’s Starlink was being conducted in Rwanda and Nigeria as part of an ongoing partnership.
MTN added that a number of projects were in progress, including planned direct-to-cell testing in Ghana and South Africa with Lynk Global.
According to the corporation, it was also in talks with suppliers such as AST SpaceMobile for experiments in South Sudan and Nigeria. “We are moving forward with negotiations with Eutelsat OneWeb for a planned pilot in South Africa in parallel.”
