Bluesky has formally improved its photo support, with a particular emphasis on larger file sizes and higher resolution to better serve photographers, artists, and the like.
In an effort to improve photo posting, Bluesky is expanding its social network. The social media company announced the release of the latest version, 1.121, of its app late on Wednesday, which improves the upload size and resolution of photographs in posts.
Bluesky used to only allow 1MB or smaller photo submissions. This restriction has now doubled to 2MB. Additionally, instead of rendering at 2000x, images will now render at up to 4000px.
With app version 1.121, Bluesky now supports better quality photos by increasing resolution to up to 4000px on the longest edge, doubling file size limits to 2MB per image, introducing swipeable carousels that allow mixed aspect ratios so vertical and horizontal photos can coexist without cropping, and displaying single-image posts as uncropped previews in their original dimensions directly in the timeline, all aimed at making the platform more competitive with networks like Threads and X.
Additionally, a swipeable carousel that can accommodate various aspect ratios without cropping took the place of the company’s previous image grid. (However, some Bluesky users’ initial comments suggest that they would rather have the option of posting as a grid or carousel.)
The modifications may increase Bluesky’s app’s ability to compete with other social networks, such as X or Meta’s Threads.
Thanks to its support for a range of aspect ratios and its carousel, which provided ingenious methods to divide up larger photographs for viewing in this manner, the latter gained popularity after its inception as a photo display. It even prompted a developer to write a stand-alone program to assist users in uploading their panoramic images to Threads. (Although it isn’t stated in Threads’ literature, Threads still allows a bigger maximum picture size.)
