In an effort to close the digital gap in Nigeria, the Federal Government launched a digital village pilot project that offers free internet access to the rural hamlet of Ibwa 2, Isuanin Kura, Gwagwalada, in the Federal Capital Territory.

Over 20 million Nigerians still lack access to any kind of communications, according to Dr. Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, who spoke at the launch on Wednesday.

“You will see that there is absolutely no network in many communities if you pull out your phone.

Because individuals are unable to access banking services, medical treatment cannot be provided remotely, and education is suffering, he claimed, “this is costing the country significantly.”

The frequently disregarded security consequences of inadequate connectivity were further emphasized by Tijani, who stated, “Those locations that are not covered become difficult to govern.” The president has ordered the construction of roughly 7,000 telecom towers across the country. The first pilot of that plan is what we are doing here today.

Along with nearby areas without any kind of telecommunications, the Ibwa 2 village, which has a population of over 12,000, is one of the first to benefit from this project.

The minister claims that the project does more than merely make phone calls possible.

“We are connecting the hospital here with the same equipment. This facility’s medical professionals may consult with experts throughout the world thanks to equipment given by Huawei.

“We just saw the community chief use this technology to communicate with a doctor in Abuja,” he said.

Remote teaching is also revolutionizing education.

“With this equipment, a science teacher from Lagos will now instruct the students remotely at the local school, where there are not enough teachers,” Tijani continued.

He emphasized the community-wide connectivity by saying, “Anyone can connect to the community Wi-Fi here, enabling them to access global opportunities.”

With the statement, “Where you live shouldn’t determine whether you have access,” the minister emphasized the government’s dedication to diversity. In order to bring almost all Nigerians online, this project prioritizes the North, where over 80% of unconnected communities are located, while balancing connections across the country.

He praised the partnership with leading companies in the sector, particularly Huawei.

“To manage these infrastructures sustainably, we are collaborating with the top companies,” Tijani stated.

The ministry and Huawei gave the community chief 125 cell phones to encourage affordability.

These phones are among the least expensive smartphones in the world, with prices of around $25 per.

The minister disclosed, “We want to test and widely introduce affordable devices, as well as look into local manufacturing options.”

A major step toward Nigeria’s digital inclusion and the government’s overarching objective of incorporating all residents into the digital economy is the Ibwa 2 pilot.

Speaking as well, Terrence Wu, Managing Director of Huawei Nigeria Enterprise, called the alliance a ground-breaking endeavour founded on cooperation and innovation.

In order to promote inclusive and resilient communities, he described the three main pillars of the project: mobile connectivity, digital education, and easily available health care.

Wu emphasized that the ministry’s leadership, Globacom’s infrastructure, and Huawei’s technology would bring telemedicine and fast networks to underprivileged areas.

He said that by providing rural Nigerians with access to economic, medical, and educational prospects, the project aimed to ensure that no one is left behind in the digital age.

Mr. Kazeem Kaka, Head of Division for North West at Globacom, called the opening of the Nigerian National Digital Village a turning point in the nation’s digital revolution.

He called the partnership between Globacom, Huawei, and the Ministry of Communications a “bold announcement towards an inclusive digital future” and commended them for bringing connectivity to neglected communities.

Kaka emphasized the vital role that reasonably priced cell phones and internet connectivity play in giving Nigerians access to possibilities in healthcare, education, and business.

In order to create a prosperous future, he advised the people of Ibwa 2 community to preserve the infrastructure and make the most of the new digital resources.
