It looks like thee is an ongoing attack on some prominent accounts on Twitter. Accounts belonging to Presidential aspirant Joe Biden, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, Former President, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Apple among others have been hijacked for cryptocurrency fraud purposes. Hackers are asking users to make payments in Bitcoin and Twitter is saying people should beware.
There is little we know about this at this time as Twitter just announced that it is aware and is working on a quick fix. The tweets by the hackers can been soliciting donations via Bitcoin and it looks like some have fallen for the scam, again we don’t have specific numbers at this time.
A Bill Gates tweet for example says “Everyone is asking me to give back”, and now is the time promising to double all payments to a Bitcoin address for the next 30 minutes.
A Bill Gates spokesperson told CNN that “We can confirm that this tweet was not sent by Bill Gates, this appears to be part of a larger issue that Twitter is facing. Twitter is aware and working to restore the account.”
The hackers appear to be using prominent verified account in order to lure unsuspecting users to making fictitious donations.
