With 150 million members, Google One has grown over 50% since February of last year. The subscription service was first made available in May 2018.
According to Reuters, Alphabet recently announced that its Google One subscription service, which charges users for cloud storage and AI capabilities, had surpassed 150 million members with “millions” of users subscribing to the AI Premium tier, which costs $19.99 per month in the US. (It’s unclear if that includes free trials for a whole year.)
Since February 2024, over six years after the service’s introduction, when Google One surpassed 100 million subscriptions, that represents a 50% rise. In the same month, Google unveiled a $19.99/month subscription that gave customers access to AI features that were not available to free users. The business still offers cheaper Google One subscription tiers for file storage, but they lack the majority of AI functions.
With the announcement of AI Premium to access Gemini Advanced and other capabilities, the firm last reported 100 million subscribers in February 2024. All things considered, Google is now considering using subscriptions to make money off of Gemini.
In the same month, Google launched a $19.99 (about Rs. 1,710) per month plan that gave customers access to AI features that were not available to free users. The business still offers cheaper Google One subscription tiers for file storage, but they lack the majority of AI functions.
According to Shimrit Ben-Yair, a Google vice president in charge of the subscription service, the new AI tier was responsible for “millions” of memberships.
Alphabet is working to expand beyond advertising, which generated nearly seventy percent of its $350 billion (about Rs. 29,93,350 crore) in revenue in 2024. Google One is part of this strategy.
As Alphabet struggles with the danger of AI chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Google’s own Gemini, to its search engine dominance, its success with subscriptions may be crucial to its long-term financial prospects.
In court testimony last week, an Apple executive said that AI solutions were the first to result in a drop in searches on Apple’s Safari browser. The introduction of AI-powered search alternatives by the iPhone manufacturer is a setback for Alphabet, which saw a $150 billion (about Rs. 12,82,864 crore) decline in market value that day.
Ads have not yet been seamlessly included into AI interfaces, in contrast to search engines. Instead, a lot of businesses charge customers based on product consumption or through subscriptions.
How Google will adjust has been questioned by investors.
When asked about plans to monetize Gemini during Google earnings call in February, CEO Sundar Pichai responded, “Just like you’ve seen with YouTube, we’ll give people options over time.” He further said “For this year, he thinks everyone will see the team be focused on the subscription direction.”
Google One “Basic” offers 100 GB of storage across Drive, Gmail, and Photos for $1.99 a month. “Standard” is $2.99 for 200 GB and offers 3% back for Google Store purchases.
The next tier, “Premium,” costs $9.99 for 2 TB and offers unlimited Google Photos Magic Editor savings in addition to 10% back at the Google Store. Additionally, there are paid Google Workspace capabilities like Calendar appointment scheduling and extended Meet calls that may be livestreamed to YouTube.
With Gemini Advanced, NotebookLM Plus, and Gemini (side panel) available in Gmail, Docs, and Workspace, Google One AI Premium comes next. Additionally, it offers early access to AI capabilities that are still in the experimental stage, such as Search AI Mode and other Labs.
You get all the other perks including 5 TB of storage for $24.99 a month. It’s merely additional storage after that:
10 TB for $49.99;
20 TB for $99.99;
30 TB for $149.99;
AI Premium is oddly not included in Google One’s annual plans, which range from 100 GB ($19.99) to 5 TB ($249.99) with some discounts if paying monthly.
Google One began selling Fitbit Premium and Nest Aware in the UK last year, and we’ll likely see further updates for AI Premium next week. That hasn’t grown yet, and consumers would much rather have YouTube Premium included. A small discount is the closest that we’ve come to that so far.
