Founded in 2007 by Canadian and American Standford Business School duo – Ned Tozun and Sam Goldman, D.light is a leading company in the sustainable energy space. The company has officially launched in Nigeria and plans to transform at least a billion lives by 2030.

The company is currently operating in several markets including India, China, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Uganda, and Nigeria is its latest addition. D.light has ventured into Nigeria with over 25 million sustainable products. These solar-powered products include solar lanterns, solar home systems, TVs, radios, and even smartphones which are already being sold in more than 70 countries across the globe.

The company’s board Chairman, Mrs. Ibukun Awosika while speaking at the launch event spoke about D.light’s passion and goal to impact and transform billions of lives across the world. She also emphasized that the company’s biggest goal of inclusiveness. “Our vision is to change the lives of billions of people on the face of the earth who are crying for equity to have a chance to live a better life. We are in Nigeria to transform Africa one community at a time, and this is our driving force,” she said.

Co-founder and President of the company, Sam Goldman while giving his opening address at the launch said that “The reality is that we are still so far from where we need to be in terms of our population and their needs. Hence our target market is low-income individuals; not just the rural communities which is why the company adopts the ‘pay-as-you-go’ model. Access to sustainable energy will not be possible unless we solve the funding problem.”

D.light’s co-founder and CEO, Ned Tozun revealed in his address that the company had provided employment for more than 6,000 Africans so far and that entering the Nigerian market would create more job opportunities. “Our target is lower-income individuals. There is the sun in the village and the cities, so when we just say a rural market, it is not. The guy who lives in Lagos, but doesn’t have a generator shouldn’t even use a generator if he can have a solar solution. Why? Because of environmental sustainability. So, when you think about all the ESG matters, you will encourage more people to use alternate sources of energy rather than polluting sources of energy and that helps everywhere; whether you are in the city or in the village. It is about lower income,” he explained.

According to him, the company is looking to solve the entire problem chain by innovating the products, delivering them at the most reasonable price, and creating an affordable payment system – pay-as-you-go. This way, people do not need to have all the funds before they can get their hands on sustainable energy solutions. They can acquire them and continue to pay as they use them.

Some of the dignitaries present at the launch include Vice President Yemi Osibajo, D.light’s CEO, and Florian Seche, CEO of HMD – the company’s strategic partner. The highlight of the launch was the official launch of the iMax 10 Solar Power System, a solar inverter battery system that promises to give Nigerians the best when it comes to sustainable energy.
