MTN Nigeria and the Lagos State government have teamed up to transform the Obalende underbridge into Y’ELLO Bus Park, a contemporary transport hub. The initiative seeks to turn a neglected, notorious area into a safe, sustainable community hub.

The idea was revealed in an X post on Tuesday by Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab.

According to Wahab, the renovation would turn the deteriorated area into a secure, community-focused, and useful institution.

He claims that the new bus park will have over 60 public restrooms, kiosks, a road camp for Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and security agency officials, a recycling drop-off station, an organised and regulated transport terminal, and other amenities for residents and commuters.

He stated that safety, health, and aesthetics are the project’s top priorities, pointing out that solar-powered lights will increase night time visibility, improve closed-circuit television (CCTV) coverage, and aid in reducing criminal activity in the Obalende axis.

The commissioner also stated that a dedicated recycling station will deter illicit garbage disposal, and a biodigester system will be developed to handle wastewater sustainably.

According to Wahab, the rehabilitation would also feature tree planting to enhance air quality and beautify the surroundings, as well as solar panels to promote energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions.

He explained that the project is a part of the state government’s attempts to reclaim public areas and make them safe, sustainable, and useful for locals.

The primary aim of the Y’ELLO Bus Park is

  • Eco-Friendly Infrastructure: In order to increase energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions, solar energy will power the facility. A biodigester system for environmentally friendly wastewater treatment will also be included.
  • Sanitation & Waste Management: Plans call for more than 60 public restrooms for commuters as well as a dedicated recycling drop-off site to deter illicit dumping.
  • Security & Safety: To remove blind areas and discourage criminal behaviour, the park will be outfitted with solar-powered CCTV cameras and improved lighting.
  • Operational Facilities: The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and security staff will have a road camp there, along with a controlled transport terminal and vendor kiosks.
  • Environmental Aesthetics: As part of the project, trees will be planted to improve the surrounding area’s aesthetics and air quality.

As part of MTN Nigeria’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), this renovation is being carried out.

The action comes after the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources took enforcement measures to remove squatters and unauthorised buildings from the area.

According to Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab, this project aligns with the state’s broader agenda to reclaim and repurpose public spaces into functional urban assets.
