Earlier yesterday, Facebook revealed new AI-powered tools that would enable users to express themselves more creatively on the network. The changes include the option to add dynamic backdrops to text posts, animated profile images, and photo-restyling tools for Stories and Memories. The new feature on Facebook is intended to improve individual expression through motion and generative effects.

Meta is probably betting that these new features will provide a more individualised experience that appeals to Gen Z as it attempts to keep Facebook relevant among younger people on its flagship app.

The recently added animated profile picture function adds motion effects to still images, giving the impression that the person is wearing a virtual party hat, waving, or forming a heart. Facebook suggests taking a clean picture of a single individual facing the camera to get the best results. Images that are already on the platform or taken straight from a user’s camera roll can be used. Additionally, the business intends to offer additional animation choices all year round.

“Restyle”, a tool that uses Meta AI to reinvent the look of user-uploaded photographs, is another way Facebook is improving its Memories function, which resurfaces posts from the same date in past years, and Stories feature, which is brief photo and video uploads that vanish after 24 hours.

Users can choose from preset themes, such as anime, illustrated, glowy, ethereal, and more, or submit a text-based prompt after choosing a Memory to share or uploading a photo to Stories. It is also possible to change the colours, lighting, and moods, as well as to use different backdrops, such as a cityscape or any beach.

Facebook is also progressively introducing animated backgrounds to liven up text posts. To make their posts stand out in the stream, users can select from a range of still and animated scenes, such as falling leaves or rolling ocean waves, by clicking on the new rainbow “A” icon. Seasonal backdrops will soon be available, according to the business.

Facebook continues to be a dominant social media platform with around 2.1 billion daily active users. It has, however, had difficulty drawing in and keeping a younger audience in recent years.

The platform has adopted new technology, such as artificial intelligence, and unveiled a more modern redesign in order to solve this. The ability to utilise unique display names within groups, akin to how Reddit handles usernames in its groups, and a friends-only feed are two other recent changes. By adding a new button to users’ profiles that notifies the recipient of a poke, the platform is also trying to revive its poke feature, which is essentially a method to tap another user on the shoulder.

The importance of this new feature is aimed at the following, in which users can create:

  • Animated profile photographs: Users can now create looping animations from static profile photographs. Waves, hearts, party hats, confetti, and “natural” motions are examples of preset motions. Meta advises utilising a crisp, front-facing photo of just one person for optimal effects.
  • Animated Text Post Backgrounds: Users can choose dynamic backgrounds, such as falling leaves or flowing ocean waves, using a new rainbow “A” icon in the post composer. It is anticipated that throughout the year, festive and seasonal backgrounds will be added.
  • AI “Restyle” for Stories and Memories: Using verbal prompts or predefined themes such as anime, illustrated, glowy, or ethereal, this program reimagines photographs using Meta AI. Additionally, it can change the background, putting the person downtown or on a beach.

These capabilities, which are presently being rolled out progressively to the user population worldwide, are driven by Meta’s generative imaging models, which are comparable to Emu. Users still have flexibility over whatever animations or styles they choose to use and share, even though these tools are embedded into the main app experience and cannot be completely deactivated.
