Since the Trump administration, the United States has suffered a shortage of chip supply which has encouraged most smartphone manufacturers to venture into producing semiconductors, such as Apple and Samsung. Relentlessly, IBM has built its first 2nm-sized chip while they brag about their modern finger-sized chip technology.

IBM infused several billions of transistors onto the finger-sized semiconductor — this tech is expected to bolster its host performance by 45% extra. The previous 7 nm-sized chip is said to delay its host processor by 75%, comparing their capabilities of the latest 2nm-sized chip, conforming to the chip maker.

The 7nm chip turned out to either function well boosting the performance of its processor or stabilize its power efficiently. Meanwhile, the new fingers-sized chip can boost its performance and improved battery life simultaneously.

For contrast, devices equipped with this 2nm-sized chip, its processor is expected to function at a faster pace while strengthening its power pack to be more efficient.

It is worth noting that these devices are liable to be charged once after steady usage that has lasted for days — 7nm chips mostly process fast while your battery life drains accordingly, in line with IBM.

Nonetheless, a PC with this finger-sized chip is also expected to process at extraordinary speed while laptops will experience an improved power efficiency. Relentlessly, autonomous vehicles can also utilize this advanced chip — AV is expected to “detect and react to object in a speed of light.

All these interesting capabilities are absent in the previous 7nm chip, IBM announcement made it worth noting that chip users such as data centres, artificial intelligence, quantum computers, 5G and 6G efficiency, and space explorer should expect the best of their practice with this chip.

In contrast to other chip manufacturers’ 5nm chip technology with node processor that has featured in several mobile devices such as Apple’s M1, Huawei’s Kirin 9000, and A14, IBM has succeeded with the breakthrough. Meanwhile, other tech companies are still functioning on the previous 7nm-sized chip, including, AMD and Qualcomm.

While companies like Intel uses 10nm and 14nm-sized chips — by 2023, this company should have the technology to produce the 7nm chips, according to their performance in manufacturing this technology.

Although the likes of AMD and Qualcomm have been using TSMC’s 5nm chip technology with node processor. The tech company is reportedly developing its 2nm finger-sized chip to rival IBM — as well as other sizes such as 4nm and a 3nm.

In sum, customer devices are yet to utilize these tools and these smartphone manufacturers are yet to make it known when their products will feature on this tech. IBM disclosed that towards the end of 2021 their 7nm chip will be available for commercial use.

It is worth noting that producing or designing a chip like “2nm” is a different scenario where it is also available as a commercial product. Several technologies have been designed and built but queued for commercial use until the time is right.

The latest finger-sized chip is a futuristic technology — the good news is, now we know it exists.
