Three former Spotify employees are taking the recommendation intelligence behind one of the world most influential music platforms into e-commerce. Their new startup, Malachyte, has raised $10 million in seed funding to help online stores personalise shopping in real time.

TechCrunch reports that Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson and Shivaditya Sinha spent years working on Spotify behavioural intelligence infrastructure, including Vector AI, which is designed to predict a user intent and next action rather than relying only on past behaviour. That system reportedly powers about 90 percent of Spotify recommendations to around 800 million users.

Malachyte wants to apply a similar idea to online shopping. The company argues that most e-commerce personalisation is still too static. A store may look at old purchases, broad demographics or logged-in profiles, but it often does not understand what a shopper is trying to do in the moment. That means a first-time visitor and a returning customer can still see a generic storefront when their intent is very different.

The startup says its two-headed Vector AI can read real-time signals such as search terms, clicks, hovers, scrolls and add-to-cart behaviour to infer both broad taste and immediate shopping intent. A customer searching for heavy-duty boots and clicking steel-toed options, for example, should quickly see workwear and gloves rise while unrelated items move down.

That sounds like a small improvement, but it addresses a real commerce problem. E-commerce stores spend heavily to get traffic, then lose customers because product discovery is too slow or too generic. If AI can understand intent within a single session, retailers may improve conversion without waiting for months of customer history.

The timing is strong because AI is now entering commerce from several directions. Shopify just reported strong growth and told investors that AI is expanding what merchants can do, a story we covered in Shopify shares jumping as AI and merchant growth lifted its outlook. Spotify is also pushing AI in music and fan creativity, which we covered in Spotify turning 300 million Premium users into an AI music bet.

Malachyte sits between those two worlds. It takes a recommendation culture from media and applies it to commerce, where the result is not only more engagement but potentially more sales. For merchants, the question is simple: can the AI help a customer find the right product faster than a normal search bar or recommendation carousel?

The company has been testing since 2024, worked with more than 20 enterprise customers across travel, grocery and retail, and has since focused on e-commerce. Its platform went live with Fun.com in 2025 and became generally available to Shopify merchants through a native integration in June 2026. Larger retailers can connect through its API.

The seed round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient Ventures, with participation from Harpoon Ventures. Malachyte says it will use the money to scale distribution and hire more product and commercial leaders.

The wider lesson is that AI personalisation is moving away from broad segments and toward live intent. That could make online shopping more useful, but it also raises questions about how much behavioural data retailers collect and how transparent they are with customers. The best version of this technology helps people find what they came for. The worst version becomes another layer of invisible manipulation. Malachyte will need to prove it can deliver the former.
