Gossy Ukanwoke, the dynamic founder of BAU Online, gained global recognition when his cutting-edge educational platform was showcased on CNN’s ‘African Start-Up’ series. The significant platform illuminates noteworthy SME entrepreneurs across Africa. Selected excerpts from this enlightening interview are viewable right here.

Dubbed Nigeria’s equivalent to Mark Zuckerberg due to their parallel entrepreneurial paths, Ukanwoke founded a social networking site during his own university days. This venture sparked an innovative concept: forming Nigeria’s inaugural private online university – BAU Online. Now, at 25, Ukanwoke manages a thriving enterprise alongside a motivated team of fifteen educators and a burgeoning student community encompassing approximately five hundred individuals. However, his path forward presents numerous challenges in this promising venture.

As highlighted in the ‘African Start-Up’ series, Ukanwoke credits the positive response and wide audience of his ‘Students Circle Network’ as the catalyst for his vision to establish Nigeria’s first private online university.

Providing insight into Africa’s education landscape, Ukanwoke underscored the crucial role of higher education in steering Africa’s development. He expanded, “We named it the ‘Beni American University’ to indicate our adoption of an American curriculum and semester system. Despite operating in Africa, we think globally. Our ambition is to set up an international standard university that propagates top-tier education.” He also conveyed an optimistic forecast of soon seeing a vibrant campus alive with students and faculties.

Despite the boom in varied educational mediums driven by technology, Nigeria’s education regulations still demand physical campuses for universities. Consequently, Ukanwoke envisages building physical infrastructure for BAU and potential investment into already established local universities.

Currently, BAU Online offers diverse courses including Journalism, Corporate Diplomacy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Ukanwoke asserts an understanding of the challenges lying ahead, remarking, “We still have a substantial journey to traverse, much work to undertake, and numerous policy hurdles to overcome. Yet, we are satisfied with the progress made so far.”
