Thanks to Spotify, the music streaming giant, which has expanded its data-driven discovery capabilities to the literary realm with the official introduction of audiobook charts in the US and the UK, which include rankings of the best audiobooks by genre and the best audiobooks overall, based on the listening preferences of Spotify users. Instead of relying solely on stream volume, these statistics, which are updated every week, rank the most popular titles according to distinct listener behaviour.

The genre charts for the UK will include SFF, self-help, mystery and thriller, and memoirs and biographies. These will include romance, mystery and thriller, self-help, SFF, memoir and biography, business and careers, teen and YA, history, parenting and relationships, and religion and spirituality in the US. The Bookseller was informed by a spokesman that more will be added to the UK “over time”.

For the US, the genre charts will include 11 distinct genres, or better still categories, which are romance, mystery & thriller, self-help, SFF, biography & memoir, business & careers, teen & YA, religion & spirituality, history, and parenting & relationships. It will also include an “overall” chart.

To make sure the charts show what people are actually finishing, rankings give priority to real listener interaction, specifically removing brief previews and unintentional clicks.

The rankings will be updated every week and available to both free and paid users in the audiobooks hub, much like Spotify’s music and podcast charts.

Regarding the choice, the business stated that with music and podcasts, we’ve seen that demand grows when content is easier to access, discover, and enjoy. “The next step in using the same concept to make books more approachable, interesting, and culturally relevant in real time is to create audiobook charts.

Spotify’s head of partnerships and licensing, Duncan Bruce, told The Bookseller: “We’ve shown with the music and podcast chart that demand increases when content is more accessible, discoverable, and enjoyable. We are excited to now extend that experience to audiobooks in order to give users, publishers, and authors even more ways to find what’s popular on Spotify and to help connect books with culture.

A representative went on to explain the methodology behind the chart; “As with music and podcasts, we rank audiobooks according to Spotify listening activity. Unique listener behaviour is given more weight in our charts than just stream volume. We choose this approach because we think charts ought to show real listener involvement. This implies that we don’t count a rapid click or include brief previews.

After launching its audiobooks division in the US in 2022, Spotify began incorporating audiobooks into its premium memberships in the UK in October 2023. “This is just the beginning of Spotify’s audiobooks journey,” the company stated at the time. We’ve been trying to make audiobooks seamless, and we’ll keep developing and improving this going forward.”

To locate the charts, users are advised to follow this path by going through: Go to Home > Search > Select Audiobooks Hub > Dive Deeper > Audiobook Charts.

This launch comes after Spotify’s successful introduction of Audiobook Wrapped in late 2025 and its recent foray into physical book sales through a cooperation with Bookshop.org.

Through the Audiobooks portal, consumers in the US and the UK can access both free and premium versions.
