When X, formerly known as Twitter, launches a new marketplace for inactive handles, Premium members will be able to request and buy dormant identities. The action fits into the platform’s larger plan to increase revenue sources and stimulate demand for its Premium membership packages in the face of diminishing ad revenue.

This means that premium customers will be able to request and buy usernames through X’s new marketplace for inactive handles. Both free and paid solutions will be available on the marketplace for requesting or obtaining qualified handles in the future marketplace. The marketplace, according to X, will allow users, particularly Premium+ and Premium Business customers, to acquire popular identities that haven’t been used in a long time and the price ranges for rare handles could range from $2,500 to more over seven figures, according to X.

“Priority” handles are usernames that frequently consist of alphanumeric combinations, comprehensive names, or multi-word phrases. Subscriptions to Premium+ and Premium Business are eligible to request these handles for free. A user will receive the handle for free from X if their request is granted. In the event that a user downgrades or cancels their membership, however, their previous handle will be restored to their account following a 30-day grace period.

Usernames such as @GabrielJones, @PizzaEater, and @ParadoxAI are examples of “Priority” handles, according to X.

Through direct payments, X will be able to increase revenue with the opening of the new marketplace. Although it is still dealing with a weak advertising business, it may also boost interest in its Premium subscription option.

Requests are typically assessed within three business days, according to the social network, but not all requests are accepted. After a request is granted, the user’s previous handle is kept private and will never be shared with another person.

Customers on X’s Premium+ and Premium Business accounts can request priority handles, which are frequently complete names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations, for free. Following approval of a request, the handle will be immediately added to the subscriber’s account.

For the purpose of preventing inactive handles from being exploited or permanently lost, X points out that if a user downgrades or cancels their Premium subscription, the handle will return to their account following a 30-day grace period.

The purpose of this system is to prevent username trading and abuse while preserving fairness. The corporation claims that not all requests are approved and that they are normally reviewed in three business days.

Names that are short, generic, or culturally significant are examples of “rare” handles. These handles will be provided through public drops and direct, invitation-only, pre-priced purchases rather than through regular requests.

Several persons can apply for the handle for public drops and selection is based on a user’s involvement and reach on the social network, their intended use of the handle, and their prior contributions on the site, according to X.

The cost of direct purchases is determined by several factors, including the word’s popularity, character length, and cultural significance. Even after their Premium subscription expires, the customer retains the handle they purchased.

Handles such as @Pizza, @Tom, and @One are examples of “rare” handles.

On a support page, X stated that it is launching the marketplace rather than making inactive handles available for claim all at once in order to avoid bot spam or abuse, adding that the marketplace “allows for fair and secure distribution through a controlled process.”

Users have the option to “Register” their interest in adding a certain inactive handle that isn’t on the marketplace to their Watchlist. X will let them know when it’s available.

With the increasing significance of digital identity in the creative economy, X’s new handle marketplace represents a change in how usernames are treated as digital real estate, which may have value, influence, and even be resold.

Digital identity components, such as usernames and verification badges, are increasingly being monetised by internet platforms, according to industry watchers. Elon Musk has envisioned X as a “global digital town square” that combines identification, communication, and commerce services. This highlights X’s continuous transformation from a conventional social media platform.

Although some users are happy about the chance to claim inactive handles, others are worried that the system would favour well-off people or companies while excluding regular users who cannot pay premium usernames. Some say that making money off of handles would encourage scalping or speculative trading, which is comparable to what happened with early web domain names.

As long as respectable users are able to obtain domains that accurately represent their identity or business, X argues that the marketplace is set up to strike a balance between opportunity and integrity.
