xAI Adds File Support to Grok API

Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, has rolled out file support for its Grok API, allowing developers to upload and analyse multiple file types within their AI applications. The update fulfills a pledge made in August to make Grok, the company’s generative AI model that powers several features on X (formerly Twitter) accessible through a public API.

xAI, Elon Musk’s AI startup, recently improved the functionality of its Grok-powered API. It is now possible for developers to incorporate text, PDF, and CSV files into their AI applications, which facilitates data chat and interactive dialogues.

As a result, xAI now provides a capability that is already offered by the majority of significant AI businesses.

The features of xAI have been growing quickly. The Grok Imagine feature was recently improved by the company, enabling users to input specific suggestions and create videos based on them. There has been an improvement in output fidelity, comprehension of difficult prompts, and instruction following. Through its Files API, the Musk-led company is now providing file functionality to developers.

Musk re-shared a post on X (previously Twitter) on Tuesday, emphasising that the new Files API will enable developers to provide the option to upload and attach a document and respond to requests based on it. The API employs an agentic tool calling function to analyse files. For this reason, only the Grok 4 and Grok 4 Fast AI models can use the feature.

The API now supports a wide range of file formats, including CSV, JSON, PDF, Python, JavaScript, markdown, plain text, and more. However, it can only handle files up to 48 MB in size. Additionally, it is not possible to pull requests from files in batches.

In terms of features, it allows for multi-turn chats and multi-file support. The underlying AI model can now execute sophisticated data analysis, statistical computations, and more thanks to the integration of the code execution tool. Additionally, the model can develop and run Python code that directly processes your files.

Interestingly, the Files API costs $10 for every 1,000 tool calls. The model counts each time it searches the documents as one tool invocation. These fees are added to the regular token costs. Prompt, reasoning, completion, and cache tokens are used in file-based discussions (for repetitive document content).

The file support update comes after a number of recent enhancements to the ecosystem of xAI. Grok Imagine, the company’s video creation tool, was improved earlier this month, allowing users to type in-depth instructions and produce brief videos with improved visual fidelity and instruction-following.

These changes collectively represent xAI’s overarching objective, which is to turn Grok into a multimodal, agentic AI platform that can perform data analysis, code execution, and autonomous reasoning in addition to text and image comprehension.

xAI’s new Files API introduces file support, enabling a wave of AI applications from coding assistants and automated business audits to research tools that summarize papers or analyse datasets. The update positions Grok as a developer-first, high-performance alternative within the X ecosystem.

Grok’s ecosystem is rapidly growing thanks to Elon Musk’s xAI, and the addition of file handling features is a significant turning point. Grok now offers the technological adaptability required to power cutting-edge enterprise and consumer-grade AI solutions, including support for different formats, multi-file discussions, and integrated code execution.

xAI’s aim is clear as the generative AI market becomes more competitive: make Grok deeply functional rather than merely conversational. This update gives developers more freedom than ever to create the next generation of intelligent, document-aware AI applications, bringing the company closer to that objective.
