Apple Watch Adds Wrist Flick Alerts and AI Workout Features

Fresh from WWDC 2025, Apple has just supercharged the Apple Watch experience with watchOS 26, bolstering both design and intelligence in a single release. The “Liquid Glass” design language seen across iOS and macOS now flows onto the wrist, giving widgets, notifications, and the revamped Workout app a translucent polish reminiscent of Apple’s other platforms .

On a deeper level, watchOS 26 introduces a clever wrist flick gesture, letting users dismiss calls or notifications with a simple flick of the wrist—no taps necessary. This one-handed convenience smooths everyday interactions and brings Apple Watch closer to the always-on usability people have long demanded . Alongside gesture control, adaptive volume now tailors playback loudness based on ambient noise—perfect for runners who want optimal audio feedback during workouts without fiddling with settings.

But the true standout is Workout Buddy, an AI-driven fitness coach powered by Apple Intelligence. This feature delivers real-time encouragement, personalized feedback and context-aware music suggestions straight from Apple Music—on-device and in real time, no cloud required . It’s a clear step toward transforming the Watch from a passive tracker into an active coach, blending motivational pep-talks with data-driven insights.

watchOS 26 also makes strides in messaging and accessibility: real-time translation, smart replies, check-in prompts after workouts, and live captions are now built into the wrist UI. The new Notes app finally lands on the Watch, enabling list-taking and note-reference without pulling out your phone—small but welcome evolution.

Compatible with Apple Watch Series 6 and newer, as well as Watch Ultra models, watchOS 26 drops support for older hardware and requires pairing with at least iPhone 11 . Developers get the beta today, public beta arrives in July, and the full release is expected this fall—likely alongside new Watch hardware.

Apple is making the Watch smarter and smoother in one fell swoop. Between gesture-based controls and fitness-first AI, watchOS 26 signals Apple’s ambition to turn its wearable into the ultimate wrist-top assistant—personal, proactive and entirely private.
