Jack Dorsey, the founder of Twitter, is facing significant challenges as he restructures Block, his financial services business.

Block, which is the parent company of Square and Cash App and owned by Jack Dorsey, is said to be experiencing a serious internal crisis marked by “crumbling” culture and record-low morale. Mandatory AI adoption coupled with a “rolling layoffs” plan is the root of the unrest.

With the mandatory AI usage, according to reports, employees must use generative AI technologies on a regular basis in order to maximise production; some employees have called this requirement “crazy”.

Up to 10% of the company’s workers may be affected by the layoffs that began earlier this month as part of what Bloomberg described as an “efficiency push”.

Mandatory AI use by staff and layoffs are among the current problems with his business. The other current problem is AI surveillance, where staff must send weekly update emails to Dorsey, which he then uses generative AI to summarise.

The performance pressure, according to Dorsey, has blamed the layoffs on “performance gaps”, saying that a significant number of employees were “phoning it in”, while the rest of the workforce expresses high levels of “performance anxiety”.

Also, internal backlash with sources says that the culture is “crumbling” and “deteriorating” as they are forced to use the very instruments they fear would eventually take their place.

Sources told members of the press that it has been a torturous, protracted process that might go on for weeks, which has caused significant anxiety around job security.

Wired stated that at a recent all-hands meeting, an employee stated, “We don’t yet know if our livelihoods will be affected, and this makes it incredibly hard to make major life choices without knowing if we still have a job next week.

Another worker wrote, “Morale is probably the worst I’ve felt in four years.” “Block’s overall culture is disintegrating.”

The remarks show that many employees still have concerns about generative AI, which bosses continue to bring up when reducing headcounts.

AI has obviously been a big concern for Dorsey. Block employees are now required to use AI, a directive that has caused annoyance.

One worker told Wired, “Top-down mandates to use large language models are crazy.” “We would all just use the tool if it were good.”

In keeping with Elon Musk’s DOGE mandate that federal employees provide an email summary of five weekly accomplishments, they must also give him weekly update emails. (For months prior to DOGE’s complete collapse, the provision was frequently disregarded.)

Generative AI is then allegedly used by Dorsey to summarise the emails sent by his employees. He pointed out that “performance anxiety” and “widespread concerns about layoffs” were obviously frustrating employees during the all-hands meeting.

Dorsey accused fired employees of “phoning it in”, but it appears that she did little to allay these fears. Arnaud Weber, Block’s engineering lead, added that the terminations were due to performance.

The company’s problems are indicative of a well-known narrative that is occurring at numerous other tech firms. Employees are under tremendous pressure from their employers to embrace AI at all costs, regardless of their own preferences.

Researchers have discovered that the technology is actually increasing workloads rather than decreasing them, which is a worrying trend that is already causing “AI burnout”.

Experts are concerned about the psychological repercussions as well. Researchers have discovered that workers’ ongoing fear of losing their jobs as a result of AI automation is causing them to experience symptoms including anxiety, insomnia, paranoia, and identity loss.
