Relay is shutting down, but the more interesting part of the story is where the team is going. Google is pulling some of the AI automation startup’s talent into Chrome, and that says a lot about what the browser may become next.

Relay confirmed on its own website that it is winding down the product, while TechCrunch reports that founder Jacob Bank and some team members are joining Google’s Chrome team. Relay had built tools for automating repetitive work across apps, using AI to help users create workflows without having to write code.

The shutdown is disappointing for Relay users, but the strategic direction is easy to understand. Google does not only want Chrome to be a place where people open websites. It wants Chrome to become an AI-assisted layer for browsing, search, shopping, writing, productivity and possibly task automation.

That matters because the browser is one of the most important surfaces in computing. People work inside web apps, move between tabs, copy information, fill forms, compare products, answer messages, summarize pages and manage small repetitive tasks all day. If AI can understand that context and act safely inside it, the browser becomes more than a window. It becomes an operating layer.

Relay’s talent fits that direction. AI automation is not only about generating text. It is about watching a workflow, understanding intent, using tools, moving data and completing steps. That is exactly where companies are trying to take agents. The challenge is making them useful without letting them become reckless.

Google already has Gemini inside many of its products, and Chrome is a natural next target. We recently wrote about Gemini becoming one of Google’s billion-user products, but distribution alone is not the prize. The prize is useful daily behaviour. Browser automation could be one of the places where Gemini becomes practical rather than just visible.

There is also a defensive reason for Google to move quickly. OpenAI, Microsoft, Perplexity, Apple, Arc and several agentic-browser startups are all trying to change how people search and work on the web. If AI agents begin performing tasks directly, the traditional browser and search model could be disrupted. Google has every reason to bring more automation into Chrome before someone else turns the browser into a background layer.

The risk is trust. A browser-based AI agent may see sensitive information, log into services, handle payments, fill forms or interact with private work documents. Users will need clear controls over what the AI can read, what it can click, what it can remember and when it must ask permission.

That is why Relay’s shutdown should not be read as a small startup footnote. It is another sign that AI automation talent is being absorbed by the major platforms. Standalone apps can prove the idea, but browsers, operating systems and productivity suites have the distribution to make it mainstream.

If Google uses this well, Chrome could slowly become a place where users do not only visit websites, but delegate parts of web work to AI. That would be a major shift. The browser wars were once about speed, tabs and standards. The next one may be about which browser can safely act on your behalf.
