Snap has reported a stronger second quarter, and the numbers show a company trying to prove that Snapchat is more than a struggling social app squeezed between TikTok, Instagram and YouTube Shorts.

In its second-quarter 2026 results filed with the SEC, Snap said revenue rose 19 percent year over year to $1.599 billion. Net loss narrowed to $164 million from $263 million a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA jumped to $250 million from $41 million. Operating cash flow reached $176 million, and free cash flow was $121 million.

The user numbers were also stronger than the market sometimes gives Snap credit for. Snapchat now has 971 million monthly active users and 493 million daily active users. Those are large numbers by any standard, and they suggest Snapchat remains a major social platform even if Wall Street often treats it like a smaller, more fragile advertising business.

The more interesting part is revenue mix. Advertising revenue grew 9 percent to $1.28 billion, while other revenue rose 85 percent to $316 million. That matters because Snap has been trying to reduce its dependence on pure advertising, especially after years of weakness in direct-response ads and heavy competition for marketing budgets.

Snap has also been investing heavily in products that give users more reasons to open the app beyond messaging friends. Spotlight, Snap Map, augmented reality and AI features are all part of that strategy. The company said Spotlight activity improved in the U.S., with the number of people posting to Spotlight growing more than 115 percent year over year and daily active viewers rising more than 20 percent.

That is why Snap recent decision to stop rewarding fully AI-generated Spotlight videos is important. We wrote last week that Snapchat is cutting rewards for fully AI-generated Spotlight content. That move now looks more strategic in light of earnings. If Spotlight is becoming more important to engagement, Snap cannot allow its creator economy to be flooded with low-effort synthetic clips.

The company is also leaning into direct revenue, subscriptions and hardware. Evan Spiegel used the prepared remarks to talk about SPECS, Snap see-through glasses designed for a future where AI does more work on behalf of users and people spend less time operating screens. That sounds ambitious, but it fits the wider shift toward spatial computing and AI wearables that Apple, Meta and Google are all chasing in different ways.

Snap is not as financially powerful as Meta, and it does not have Apple hardware ecosystem. But it has spent years experimenting with augmented reality, lenses and camera-first social behaviour. If smart glasses become more practical, Snap has at least earned a place in that conversation. Our recent piece on how the metaverse has quietly become spatial computing fits neatly with this direction.

There are still weaknesses. Snap remains unprofitable on a GAAP basis, and advertising growth of 9 percent is not explosive. Infrastructure costs are also rising, with Snap now expecting full-year infrastructure costs of $1.65 billion to $1.70 billion, partly because of AI and machine-learning investment. That is the same pressure hitting much larger technology companies: AI can improve products and ads, but it is not cheap to run.

For the third quarter, Snap expects revenue between $1.70 billion and $1.74 billion. That outlook suggests management believes the business is stabilizing, not just getting a temporary lift. The question is whether Snap can keep improving ad performance while building enough direct revenue and hardware optionality to make investors more patient.

Snap quarter is not a perfect comeback story, but it is a healthier one. Revenue is growing, cash flow is positive, losses are narrowing and Snapchat still reaches nearly a billion monthly users. In a social media market increasingly shaped by AI content, creator payments and wearable computing, Snap is trying to prove it still has its own lane.
