Starlink — the subsidiary of Elon Musk’s offspring is on the verge of exploding on a rivalry rampage having accomplished up to four million users subscribed to the satellite internet network.
Gwynne Shotwell, the president of SpaceX, recently met with Texas lawmakers to discuss Starlink’s interests in participating in the Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) program.
Shotwell was too enthused to disclose the milestone of Starlink’s amassed subscribers. Shotwell’s meeting with Texas lawmakers coincided with Starlink’s announcement of reaching four million subscribers worldwide.
This milestone underscores the company’s growing presence in the global satellite internet market. Shotwell’s testimony to the council of Texan lawmakers also confirmed the previous report SpaceX reported on Thursday.
Recall that SpaceX is a parent company of the satellite network provider, Starlink — they all fall under Elon Musk’s pool of technology infrastructure.
This achievement is even more impressive considering the company’s rapid growth, having gained one million new customers counting down from May 2024. “This week, by the way, we will pass 4 million customers for Starlink, which is quite exciting,” Shotwell said.
Hold on guys! Let me walk you down the aisle of Starlink’s milestone to success…
Starlink achieved one million subscribers in December 2022, marking a significant milestone for SpaceX’s satellite internet service. This rapid growth demonstrates the increasing demand for reliable, high-speed internet access, particularly in underserved or remote areas.
Starlink achieved two million subscribers in September 2023, marking a significant milestone in its rapid growth trajectory. Starlink’s impressive growth can be attributed to its expanding market presence, now available in over 100 countries, and its constantly growing constellation of nearly 6,000 satellites.
Starlink hit the three million subscriber milestone in May 2024 This achievement marks a significant growth point for SpaceX’s satellite internet service, which has been expanding rapidly since its launch in October 2020.
Now, as of September 2024, Starlink has surpassed four million subscribers demonstrating its dominance in the satellite internet market. This growth is expected to continue, with projections suggesting 9-10 million customers by the end of 2025 and 14-18 million by the end of 2026.
Without further ado, SpaceX plans to launch around 100 missions to put more Starlink satellites into orbit, including the upcoming Starlink Direct-to-Cell service with partner T-Mobile. The company also aims to produce printed circuit boards in its Starlink Bastrop facility, competing with Taiwan and other Southeast Asian countries in the market.
During Shotwell’s meeting with the Texas lawmakers, Starlink’s president mentioned that satellite technology would be necessary to reach remote areas, and Starlink is well-positioned to provide this service. She also highlighted the company’s ability to recover from setbacks, citing the example of SpaceX’s successful recovery from a high-profile test failure in 2016.
This program aims to provide broadband access to underserved communities, and Starlink is keen to participate. However, Shotwell expressed concerns about the program’s rules, particularly regarding government ownership of broadband networks if private companies fail to deliver.
Despite these challenges, Shotwell remains optimistic about SpaceX’s growth and its potential to provide critical services like broadband access to underserved communities.
Starlink’s subscriber base is concentrated in high-income countries, with 57% of customers based in the US. However, international subscriber additions are starting to outpace US growth, with strong adoption in countries like Australia, the UK, and Brazil.
