WhatsApp Develops 2-Way Voice Chats and AI-Powered Rewrite Feature

According to reports, WhatsApp is working on two brand-new, cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that will provide users with new ways to engage with the app. The two new artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities that WhatsApp for Android is apparently developing might provide users with more innovative ways to engage with the program. The article claims that the instant messaging app is developing a Rewrite feature driven by AI that can change the style of a written message. Additionally, it is claimed that the tool proofreads user messages before sending them. Additionally, the platform may be working on a two-way live speech/audio chat function for Meta AI, which would allow users to communicate with the chatbot hands-free.

An Android Authority report claims that the messaging app may be preparing to launch an AI-powered text-rewriting feature. The report discovered the new feature during an Android application package (APK) teardown of the app and claimed to have found it in the strings of code of WhatsApp for Android version 2.25.8.5. Users will not be able to test it out just yet because it is not a visible feature.

A floating action button (FAB) with a pencil icon directly above the Send button is reportedly how the AI Rewrite capability is accessible. According to reports, the option only shows up after the user enters text in the group or chat box. After a few words have been entered, users may reportedly press the pencil symbol to launch a text editor. It is said that users may choose from a wide variety of text rewriting options there.

Funny, Proofread, Puns, Rephrase, Sarcastic, Shorter, Spooky, and Supportive are among the rewriting possibilities provided by the tool, according to the article. Of them, the Proofread option is supposed to correct the message’s spelling and grammar, while the others alter the text’s tone.

Separately, WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracker, stated in another report that the instant messaging service is developing a new Meta AI upgrade. At the moment, users may communicate with the chatbot via text, ask questions, retrieve information from the internet, create graphics, and even provide audio cues. Nevertheless, a two-way vocal conversation with the AI is not feasible.

In a later update, this could be different. The most recent WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.8.7 update included a new call-like interface for Meta AI, according to the feature tracker. But beta testers won’t be allowed to utilize it because it’s still under development.

When the feature becomes live, the Meta AI interface will initiate a call-like session automatically, according to pictures released by the feature tracker. The AI will be able to chat to users while they send text messages, or users will be able to switch to text-only mode. Gemini Live and the two-way live voice discussion capability seem to be comparable.

According to WABetaInfo, users will be able to carry on the discussion even if they move to another app while the program is running in the background. A mute button is also visible, allowing users to turn down their music in loud settings. Additionally, users will be able to stop the call whenever they choose.

Notably, the business debuted the Meta AI Voice Chat service with celebrity voices in September 2024. However, it was not comparable to ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode; rather, it was only an improvement to text-to-speech (TTS). It’s unclear if the rumoured addition would provide a more human-like voice chat experience or is merely a makeover of that.

WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is releasing a big upgrade on Meta AI. It enables users to interact with the chatbot by sending audio cues, asking questions, and initiating text-based discussions. Although these features are still in the development stage, their release is anticipated soon. Additionally, a picture collage tool for status updates is allegedly being introduced by WhatsApp. Users will be able to choose from a grid of up to six photographs thanks to this functionality.
