
Google’s long goodbye to older Chrome extensions reaches a final public milestone today. As of August 31, 2026, all remaining Manifest V2 extensions are being removed from the Chrome Web Store, according to the Chrome for Developers timeline.
This does not mean every old extension instantly disappears from every browser. Google’s timeline says Manifest V2 extensions that were installed on Chrome 138 or earlier may remain installed, but they will not receive updates and cannot be reinstalled from the Chrome Web Store once removed.
That distinction matters for users. Someone with an older extension still sitting in Chrome may not notice anything immediately. But if they remove it, change laptop, reinstall Chrome or need a fresh copy, the official store route is gone.
For developers, the change closes a years-long migration fight. Manifest V3 is Google’s newer extension framework, designed around tighter permissions, service workers and a different approach to background activity. Google has pitched it as a more secure and privacy-conscious foundation for browser extensions.
The controversy is that some developers and users believe Manifest V3 also reduces the power of certain extensions, especially advanced content blockers and privacy tools. That is why the debate has never been only technical. It became a fight over who controls the browser: Google, extension developers or the user.
Google began the public phase-out years ago and announced the broader move in 2024. The August 31 removal is therefore less of a surprise and more of a final clean-up. Still, final clean-ups are when many users realise a tool they depended on has become harder to maintain or replace.
There is a security argument in Google’s favour. Old extension models can leave users exposed when abandoned software keeps running with broad permissions. A modern permission model can reduce risk, especially as browser extensions increasingly touch passwords, shopping sessions, crypto wallets and workplace tools.
But there is also a competition argument against over-centralising browser control. If the world’s dominant browser tightens what extensions can do, it affects the entire web ecosystem. Developers may adapt, but smaller tools and independent privacy projects do not always have the resources of large commercial software teams.
This lands at a time when browsers are becoming AI surfaces too. Chrome, Edge, Arc and other browsers are trying to make the browser an assistant, not just a window to the web. As more AI features arrive, the rules governing extensions, permissions and user data will become even more important. The same concern sits behind broader warnings about AI-powered cyberattacks and digital defences.
For ordinary users, the advice is practical. Check the extensions you still rely on, make sure they have active Manifest V3 versions or credible alternatives, and remove anything abandoned. The web is moving on from Manifest V2 whether users like it or not, and the safest move is to know what is still running inside the browser.
