Nscale is adding a familiar Silicon Valley operator to its board just as the AI cloud market becomes one of the hottest corners of technology finance.

Former OpenAI executive Fidji Simo has joined the board of Nscale, the AI cloud infrastructure startup reportedly preparing for a possible IPO. The Wall Street Journal reports that Simo, who previously led Instacart and held senior roles at Meta, will serve as a director while continuing as a part-time adviser to OpenAI. She is expected to recuse herself from Nscale matters involving OpenAI.

The appointment is interesting because Nscale is not selling a fashionable consumer AI app. It is trying to sit inside the infrastructure layer that makes the AI boom possible. The company has raised large sums to build AI-focused data centres, has moved around Nvidia chip capacity and recently agreed to acquire Anyscale, a software infrastructure company known for work around distributed AI workloads.

A few years ago, cloud infrastructure startups could look like expensive back-office businesses. Now, they are being treated as gateways into the AI economy. The largest model developers need compute, enterprises want private and reliable AI capacity, and investors are hunting for companies that can turn the shortage of chips and data centre space into durable revenue.

That is why Simo’s move matters. She brings product, marketplace and public-company preparation experience from Instacart, and she had been expected to help OpenAI turn its applications business into something more financially disciplined. Nscale gets someone who understands both consumer-scale software and the business pressure around AI deployment.

The board already has other high-profile names, including Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg. That signals a company preparing not only for technical growth, but also for investor scrutiny, policy questions and customer trust. AI infrastructure is no longer just about who can buy chips. It is about who can finance them, power them, operate them and convince major customers that the capacity will still be there tomorrow.

TechBooky has been following the same shift through Oracle’s cloud surge and the wider AI compute race. The new Nscale move fits that pattern. As AI demand grows, the companies behind the servers are beginning to look almost as important as the companies building the models.
