Meta Platforms Inc. is testing a new AI-powered shopping research feature inside its Meta AI chatbot as the company expands its generative AI offerings into commerce, according to a Bloomberg report.
The tool, currently being rolled out to a small group of U.S. users, is designed to provide tailored product recommendations and shopping assistance through Meta AI, aiming to compete with similar features found in OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini chatbot services.
According to Bloomberg, the feature allows users to request suggestions for products and receives a carousel of product images with brand information, prices, and short bullet-point explanations of recommendations. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the test but declined to share additional details.
The experiment shows ongoing moves by major AI developers to integrate commercial search and shopping capabilities into conversational interfaces. Google recently expanded shopping features inside its Gemini chatbot and search experiences, enabling users to compare products and check prices with AI assistance.
Meta’s broader AI strategy has increasingly included embedding artificial intelligence across its services, from social feeds to advertising and messaging, and now into consumer shopping research — a space previously dominated by traditional e-commerce platforms and search engines.
The social media company has not yet announced when the feature will be widely available or which markets it may enter beyond the initial U.S. test group.
