WhatsApp for Android is Testing a Chat Memory Feature for Meta AI

Meta AI, WhatsApp’s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, may soon acquire a new feature for Android. The instant messaging app is reportedly implementing a new conversation memory function that would enable users to request that the AI recall particular details about themselves, according to a feature tracker. It is believed that the chatbot can tailor its replies after storing a piece of information in its memory, giving users a more individualized experience. Although beta testers are now unable to use the functionality, it was observed in the most recent beta version of the app.

WABetaInfo, a WhatsApp feature tracker, claims that the new functionality will allow Meta AI to become more user-specific. The WhatsApp for Android beta version 2.24.22.9 was said to have the new functionality. The functionality is not yet available, though, and users who have enrolled in the Google Beta Program will not be able to test it out.

The new function, called conversation memory, enables users to request that Meta AI retain particular personal data. Additionally, a few images of the feature that demonstrate its potential functionality were given by the feature tracker. The Memory option will be added to Meta AI’s profile page based on the photographs. By touching the Meta AI title on the chat interface, users may access it.

This new option, titled “What Meta AI remembers about you,” is visible to users once they are on the profile page. You can access this menu choice, and it will show up once a piece of data has been saved.

According to the feature tracker, customers may request that the AI remember details like their favourite conversation style, occupation, birthdays, and food preferences. It is claimed that when the data is saved, the chatbot will be able to recall it, retrieve it, and use it to answer questions. For example, when a vegan user requests ideas, they may only receive recipes for vegan foods.

The memory functionality on ChatGPT is comparable to this. When the ‘chat memory’ function is activated, the Meta AI bot will log the user’s conversations and discover what they like and dislike. It will even attempt to comprehend their behaviour over time. By doing this, users will be able to save time and avoid repeating information while speaking with the Meta AI assistant in the future.

For example, if the user is a vegetarian and has previously discussed this with Meta AI, the new feature will remember that and make sure to promote restaurants that provide delicious vegetarian food when the user asks for a recommendation for a decent restaurant nearby.

The Meta AI chatbot’s chat memory function must be enabled by the user. In this manner, Meta AI will be able to provide users with personalized replies and recommendations. However, it’s unclear if the interaction data would be kept on the device or on a cloud storage server controlled by Meta.

Details regarding the privacy and security of the functionality are still unknown because it is still in development. Interestingly, OpenAI’s ChatGPT offers a similar capability, allowing users to select which data is stored by the AI and which is not. If users believe the AI shouldn’t have access to a certain piece of information, they may also manually erase it from memory. According to OpenAI, no major language models are trained using any of the data stored in AI’s memory.
