Meta informed members of the press on Monday that it intends to test new subscriptions that grant users access to exclusive features on its apps. According to the IT giant, the new subscriptions would enable increased AI capabilities as well as increased productivity and creativity. While the essential communications and social experiences will still free, these optional paid packs will grant access to cutting-edge AI, productivity, and creative capabilities.

Meta announced that it will provide a premium experience on Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp in the upcoming months. This will provide users greater flexibility over how they connect and share content, as well as access to unique features, while maintaining the basic services at no cost. Given that it will try a range of subscription features and bundles and that each app membership will have a unique set of exclusive features, Meta doesn’t seem to be committed to a single approach.

Additionally, Meta revealed that as part of its subscription plans, it intends to scale Manus, an AI agent that it recently purchased for an estimated $2 billion.

Meta is approaching Manus in two ways. The company will continue to offer businesses solo subscriptions while integrating Manus into Meta products. According to a screenshot posted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who frequently discovers unannounced features while they’re still in development, Meta has already been seen working on providing a shortcut to Manus AI on Instagram.

Meta also intends to try AI feature subscriptions, including Vibes video creation. The Meta AI app includes Vibes, an AI-powered short-form video experience that enables users to produce and remix AI-generated videos. Meta now intends to provide freemium access to Vibes video creation, with the opportunity to subscribe to unlock further video creation chances each month, even though Vibes has been free since its launch last year.

Paluzzi points out that the new Instagram subscription will allow users to create unlimited audience lists, view a list of followers who don’t follow you back, and view a Story without the poster noticing. However, it’s unclear what the paid features on Facebook and WhatsApp will look like.

The new subscriptions will be distinct from Meta Verified, which is important to note. The digital behemoth claims that it would take the lessons it learnt from Meta Verified to expand its subscription business and add other services that it believes regular consumers, creators, and companies will find appealing.

Because it offers a verified badge, 24/7 direct assistance, impersonation protections, search optimisation, special stickers, and more, Meta Verified is targeted at companies and content creators. The new subscriptions will be made for a wider audience, even though these features aren’t intended for regular users or non-creators.

Meta will be able to increase income by launching more subscriptions, but subscription fatigue may discourage many users. Meta will need to provide a compelling product to entice people to join up for yet another subscription because there are so many premium services vying for monthly expenditure.

Given that its Snapchat+ service is still a major source of income, Snap has demonstrated that there is a demand for social media subscriptions. Snapchat+, which offers premium features for $3.99 a month, has over 16 million users, more than doubling since the beginning of 2024.

Some of the features that are under test are enhanced AI tools, video generation, exclusive Instagram features and increased sharing limits, to mention a few.

As it begins to roll out the subscriptions in the upcoming months, Meta says it intends to listen to its user community and collect feedback.

Users can still utilise Meta Verified for verification and support functions on Facebook and Instagram for currently available premium solutions.
