The year in question witnessed the demise of notable figures like popular musician, Earl Simmons more known as DMX, Prince Philips, the Duke of Edinburg who is the husband of Queen Elizabeth with other notable figures, were expectedly in the list of the most searched ‘passings’.
The year in question also saw the release of popular drama series on Netflix, Squid Games, a South Korean survival drama streaming television series created by Hwang Dong-hyuk.
Sport lovers also had the opportunity of watching their favorite sport tournaments, with the Euro 2021, originally scheduled for 2020 on the list of the most searched items. The famed Cricket match between Australia and India topped the list of the most searched items on a general scale, with the England versus India match coming second.
At the Euro 2021, a major catastrophe was avoided in the opening group stage match between Denmark and Finland when Danish footballer, Christen Eriksen collapsed in the 42nd minute due to cardiac arrest. He had to be fitted with an Implantable Cardio Defibrillator (ICD) to survive the traumatic incident. The global concern over the former Inter Milan footballer made him the most searched athlete in 2021.
The fall of Afghanistan government to the Taliban expectedly made the Southern-Central Asian country the most searched item in the news category.
While producing an upcoming film Rust, producer Alec Baldwin discharged a gun being used as a prop, in the process killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while injuring director Joel Souza. Due to the incident, the 63-year-old film producer and political activist was the most searched actor on Google in the year 2021.
The global success of the debut single by American singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo titled ‘Drivers License” made it top the list of the most searched songs in the world.
Renowned Spanish Football team, Real Madrid FC topped the list of the most searched sport teams in the world and Chelsea FC of England due to their exploits in the UEFA Champions League was second on the rankings.
Popcat, an internet-based clicker game that enables users to score merely with clicks topped the list on the most searched games for the year with football game from EA Sports, FIFA 2022 coming second.
Marvel Studios produced superhero film based on the Marvel Comics, ‘Eternals‘ topped the list in the movie section with ‘Black Widow’ another action-packed spy thriller from the same producer coming second on the list.
The Birria tacos recipe and Indonesian fried rice ‘Nasi goreng’ were first and second respectively in the top searches for foods.
