MTN MoMo Uganda is taking a practical route into digital financial literacy by focusing on something many mobile money users already understand: small loans, repayment habits and access to future credit.

A report dated August 20 says MTN MoMo Uganda has launched a campaign called Borrow. Pay Back. Neela Neela. The campaign started at Kalerwe Market and is aimed at helping customers understand responsible borrowing and the benefits of repaying MoMo loans on time.

The message is simple, but it matters. Digital credit has become one of the most accessible financial products for millions of Africans. A customer does not need a bank branch, long paperwork or collateral to borrow small amounts. That convenience can support traders, families and informal workers, but it can also create repayment stress if customers do not understand the cost and timing of credit.

MTN MoMo Uganda is positioning the campaign around better credit behaviour. Consistent repayment can help users improve their loan limits, strengthen their profiles and gain better access to credit when they need working capital, emergency funds or short-term business support.

This is an important shift for mobile money operators. Financial inclusion is not only about giving people wallets and loan buttons. It is also about helping users understand what happens after they borrow. A digital loan that is easy to access but poorly understood can quickly become a problem for customers.

Uganda is one of the markets where mobile money has been deeply woven into daily financial life. MTN has previously described MoMo as a major financial inclusion platform, and its loans and savings marketplace brings several credit and savings products into one mobile channel.

The responsible-borrowing push also fits a wider African fintech moment. Operators are moving beyond transfers and airtime into credit, savings, insurance, merchant payments and business tools. That expansion can help close financial gaps, but it also increases the duty to explain products clearly.

We have seen similar customer-protection themes in mobile services elsewhere, including Orange Sierra Leone’s fraud alert tool. The common thread is trust. Whether the issue is fraud or credit, customers need to know how the system works and how to protect themselves.

For small traders, the value of digital credit is speed. A good borrowing record can help them restock, handle temporary cash gaps or respond to business opportunities. But that only works if repayment terms are clear and customers treat the loan as a financial tool, not free money.

MTN Uganda’s campaign is not a flashy fintech launch, but it is useful. As mobile money becomes more like a full financial platform, education around borrowing may become just as important as the products themselves.
