Reddit is testing AI-generated audio and video versions of text posts, and the move feels like the platform trying to reclaim a format that other social networks have been mining from it for years.

The company is experimenting with tools that can turn posts and comments into audio and video experiences, according to Engadget. The Verge also reports that Reddit is exploring AI-made formats that could make long text threads easier to consume beyond the traditional feed.

This is not coming from nowhere. For years, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels have been full of narrated Reddit posts, often paired with game footage or simple visuals. Creators discovered that Reddit stories can travel well when turned into short audio-video content. Reddit now appears to be asking why that value should live mostly outside Reddit.

The idea is simple. A long post or comment thread can become something a user listens to while commuting, cooking or scrolling casually. A video version can make text feel more native to the short-form feeds where younger users already spend time. AI makes that conversion cheaper and faster than hiring narrators or editors for each post.

For Reddit, the business logic is clear. The company wants more engagement, more formats and more advertising surfaces. It also wants to make its massive text archive useful in a media environment increasingly shaped by video and audio. Written communities remain Reddit’s core, but consumption habits are changing.

There are risks. Reddit is built on community context, tone, sarcasm, moderation norms and user identity. Turning posts into AI audio or video could flatten that context or make sensitive threads feel like entertainment. A dramatic voiceover may work for a funny story, but it may be inappropriate for grief, trauma, legal advice or health discussions.

There are also creator and consent questions. Reddit posts are written by users, not by Reddit’s editorial staff. If the platform turns a user’s words into a video or audio product, users will want to know how attribution works, whether they can opt out and whether AI narration changes the meaning of what they wrote.

This fits a wider pattern. Platforms are using AI not only to generate new content, but to repackage existing content into more consumable forms. We recently wrote about Google’s AI watermark debate, and Reddit’s experiment sits in the same broader conversation: AI is changing not just creation, but presentation and trust.

The move also matters because Reddit has become more aggressive about the value of its data. It has signed licensing deals with AI companies and pushed back against scraping. If its communities produce valuable stories and conversations, Reddit wants more control over how that material becomes media.

The test may or may not become a mainstream feature, but the direction is clear. Text platforms are no longer comfortable staying text-only. Audio and video are where attention keeps moving, and AI gives platforms a cheap bridge from one format to another. Reddit’s challenge will be making that bridge useful without making its communities feel harvested.
